Kim 'very happy' Microsoft never launched a handheld
Posted by XanTium | May 15 14:50 EST | News Category: Xbox_Xbox360

Speaking to eurogamer.net at the Microsoft Gamer's Day, Xbox boss Shane Kim talked about a handheld Xbox:
"I'm very happy we didn't get into it, because launching a handheld platform is like launching another Xbox 360," he said. "You have to be fully committed, as an organisation, from a resource standpoint, to doing that."
"Frankly we've got a lot on our plate with Xbox 360 and Xbox Live. We don't have any experience in that space. Our content assets don't naturally lend themselves to driving success in that particular market. So we're happy to let Sony and Nintendo slog it out."
What do you mean you don't have any experience in that market? Zune? WINDOWS MOBILE?!?

Microsoft has plenty of experience in developing for devices with limited hardware capabilities and has invested significantly into researching UI for WM7. Don't tell me you don't have experience.

If they ever do come out with a handheld... it better have 2 thumbsticks damn it!... that's the main reason I never use my PSP... the games are too hard to control with only 1 thumbstick

what he meant to say was that anything MS attempted would have been an Epic Fail in comparison to the DS... laugh.gif

As much as I'd like a well done Xbox handheld, I'd rather them not try if they don't think they can pull it off.

I think what they meant is that they can't launch two consoles at the sime time, xbox 360 + xbox handheld.

Maybe next gen they will launch a handheld, but i really don't care because i don't like handhelds.

i'm very happy too. this means that everyone working on the xbox at microsoft doesn't feel like their product is a failure and they're committed to making the 360 a success. if they felt the 360 was failing they'd prolly do like the original xbox and just cut it. 360 fo life!

(although, i did fire up my ps3 last night and downloaded the Haze demo. in game DTS, i cried, it was heavenily. not that bad of a game either)

He should be happy mostly because I think they'd fail miserably. Sony and Microsoft compete on the same basis in the console market -raw power. And since Sony put all the money on raw power in the handheld, it's likely MS would too. Since Nintendo has understood gaming is virtually only about the fun-level, they don't need ultra-graphics to impress. In the end, everyone forget about graphics, it's all about whether the game is fun or not.

So, MS competing with Sony and Nintendo would probably be stupid on the handheld market as Nintendo has won the game big-time. Sony can just pick up money on the graphics hungry, and it would not be smart of MS to try and compete with Sony's shares. Unless MS would actually make something original... but it wouldn't be american to be original, so we all know they'd go for the raw power.

So then wouldn't it make sense to target a different group? Make use of your existing products. Make a Zune phone, throw on WM7, and give the achievement whores a way to leave the house. The N-Gage was a terrible failure due to the design, but the concept itself was great. Microsoft owns the online gaming market. Given a mobile device with a 3G or better data connection, MS would plow over the PSP's market share in no time flat.

A device that can play games, access Live, and stream content from your console/PC wirelessly = win. Oh, and play all of your arcade games, Xbox originals, and new content. Its not a matter of not being able to or lacking experience or whatever Kim was talking about. Its about keeping the money in the pocket, rather than putting it into R&D of a new product.
