Microsoft's Take on April 2008 NPD Numbers
Posted by XanTium | May 15 22:33 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From majornelson.com (FYI: MS owned blog):
[QUOTE]
Microsoft's Xbox 360 has sold 10.1 million units in the U.S., making it the first current generation gaming console to break the 10 million barrier in the U.S., and contributing to global sales of over 19 million. (April NPD data)

By the numbers: Xbox 360 is the most significant contributor to industry spending and growth
*188,000 Xbox 360 consoles were sold in April. (April NPD data)
*Xbox 360 has a record-setting attach rate of 7.6 games per console, the highest attach rate in history for a console at this point in its lifecycle. (April NPD data)
*Consumers have spent more than $9.7 billion on the Xbox 360 experience. (April NPD data)
*Xbox 360 titles accounted for $186 million of all third party game sales this generation, or 53% of share. (April NPD data)
*Xbox 360 games accounted for three of the top ten games in April, and secured the #1 spot with "Grand Theft Auto IV." (April NPD data)
*Not only are we selling more games, games play better on the Xbox 360. Xbox 360 has 91 titles with a Metacritic review score of 80 or higher, compared to just 50 for PS3 and 22 for Wii.

*Grand Theft Auto IV" on Xbox 360 snags top spot in April, boosts LIVE memberships to over 12 million
*In its first five days on the market, the Xbox 360 version of "Grand Theft Auto IV" sold 1.8 million units, outselling the other platform's version by nearly 2:1 in the U.S., and making it the top selling game in April. (April NPD data)
*Gamers eager to experience "Grand Theft Auto IV" online helped boost Xbox LIVE global membership totals to over 12 million this month. Fueled by an unparalleled combination of access to friends and family, the best online gaming features and the best entertainment content, the Xbox LIVE service has doubled in membership in only one year's time.
*Microsoft sales data shows Xbox 360 consoles saw a 54% lift week-over-week as a result of "Grand Theft Auto IV," and retailers are reporting that roughly four out of every 10 Xbox 360 consoles sold included the sale of a copy of "Grand Theft Auto IV." (Microsoft internal data)
*Beginning this fall, Xbox LIVE will be the only place gamers can go for exclusive "Grand Theft Auto IV" episodes.

*Grand Theft Auto IV" marked the beginning of what promises to be another landmark year for the Xbox 360 platform, with an all-star games line up in 2008 including "Gears of War 2," "Fable 2" and "Viva Piņata: Trouble in Paradise." Stay tuned for more announcements in the coming months.

And on the other shoe..

Majornelson forgot some important points!

*Xbox 360 has a record-setting failure rate
*Xbox 360 has the loudest system, it's like owning a jet engine in your front room
*Xbox 360 supports standard DVD because we don't like em (Sony). Which means I have to rely on my PC for Blu-Ray and that means I don't get those lovely HD audio formats because Microsoft couldn't be bothered to finish writing Vista (protected audio path)

X360 also has the BEST warranty of any console.
It's not like a jet engine in your front room. Talk about exaggeration. The elite is way quieter than the old 2005 series.
What??, you mean to tell me you buy Blu-Ray of movies you already own? blink.gif More power to ya on that note. Blu-ray isn't the only format for carrying HD audio. It's a medium storage. The information on the disc is what's really important. Besides I want to GAME on any console not sit & watch movies all the time.

Lets try this
*PS3 doesn't have in game XMB. Sony is still tacking on things that should've came with the system on launch day.
*PS3 still doesn't have custom music for any game while you play. It's 2008. the PS3 came out in 2006. Two years SONY. What's the hold up?
*PS3 Some games have to have a mandatory install cause the Blu-Ray Drive is SLOW that it can't even stream the information off the drive fast enough. Sounds more like what you do with a PC than a console.
*PS3 Network - PLEASE.. Still playing catchup to what M$ has had since Xbox1 days.

Don't even get me started on the Wii. But Hey, play what you like on the console of your choosing. They're Good & Bad points from all 3 consoles.

This isn't really true. The Xbox 360 launched with an absurdly low 90 DAY warranty, and they only raised it to the industry standard 1 year warranty after all of the complaints about hardware failures.

And the 3 year RROD warranty only applies to a known hardware defect, which isn't exactly a bragging point...

Maybe because they don't feel the need for it, as did M$ with BluRay support on their 360.

If they would've made it a faster drive, then people would complain about the noise just like people do with the 360s.

HFG. Wait a min. You mean to tell me that you rather not listen to your own custom soundtrack in any game? So you'd rather hear the same music over & over & over that originally came with the game? Get real. This is 2008. That feature should be standard in all consoles period. Even the Xbox1 had that feature.

M$ went with HD-DVD. SOny bet the farm on Blu-Ray & won. SO what of it? The games look almost Identical when playing them. So what did Blu-Ray accomplish so far (besides playing movies).? Blu-Ray games aren't selling any better than Standard DVD. The same goes for movies.

Did they really just say all star game line up and Viva Piņata: Trouble in Paradise in the same sentence lol. I love my XBOX but I am looking forward to more games on the PS3 this year then on my 360. No doubt both of them will get a healty work out by years end.

I don't think that feature is anywhere near as popular as you think it is. My friends and I have all owned the original Xbox and the Xbox 360 since their respective launch days, and I don't know a single person who has ever used a custom soundtrack even once.

Not saying some people don't like it, but realistically it is a really easy feature to implement, and anyone could do it if there was any sort of demand...

The mandatory install means it doesn't suffer the texture and in game rendering problems that GTA 4 is having on a lot of 360s. I can take a few minutes from my life to install.

If I am playing COD4 (or most other games for that matter) I want to hear the gunfire, explosions and in game effects. I don't want to listen to Miley Cyrus tunes instead. Sounds great listen to an unrelated tune whilst trying to talk to your mates via In Game Chat.

You mean the 3 years for the single error (not the whole box). It needs it, some poor guys have had 6 in a couple of years.

As you know it has not even been out 2 full years yet in the US. In europe it has been out just over 13 months.

You need to expand on the problems you are experiencing whilst playing.....if you actually have a PS3 and use the PSN. If not well your opinion is not qualified from personal experience.
In your hurry to show how bad the PS3 is you missed the actual things that should be a priority to improve.
I will start you off
Standby charging of the controllers.

I don't own a Wii, nor I'm a big fan of it; so your Wii-bashing in my direction is pretty senseless. smile.gif

It's just kinda funny (imho) how precisely Nintendo could know what the market is wanting.

Shame it also affects non modded owners as well. Particularly Benq driven 360s. Nice try though wink.gif
