GameStop to Stop Zune Sales
Posted by XanTium | May 23 16:18 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From thestreet.com:
[QUOTE]
Video-game retailer GameStop has decided to stop selling Microsoft's Zune players at its stores due to what it sees as insufficient demand from customers.

"We have decided to exit the Zune category because it just did not have the appeal we had anticipated," said a GameStop spokesperson. "It (also) did not fit with our product mix." GameStop made the decision about a month ago. GameStop said it will sell Zune players online until it clears out its inventory.

Microsoft said Friday that the Zune continues to be carried by other big-box retailers. "We have a set of great partnerships that give Zune a strong presence at retail including Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart and others," said Adam Sohn, director of marketing for Zune, in a statement. "We will continue to invest in retail partnerships and have seen good momentum online and at retail over the last few months."

I think that statement says it all.

The problem with the Zune is the lack of accessories.

For instance I own a Zune. I bought a nice Kenwood 7" DVD/Nav system for my car, it also includes a USB port for plugging in an iPod (and offers full intergration) or any generic USB storage device... sadly the Zune is not supported.

HOWEVER there is a headphone looking input on the front that not only supports audio but video as well... the Zune has a similar A/V port on it, if I had a cable to connect these two I could get the Zune audio and Video output in my car... but alas such a cable does not exist (believe me, I've looked everywhere).

Sure MS sells an "av kit" that converts the 3.5mm jack to RCA outputs but they charge $30 for it and I'd still need to convert from RCA back to 3.5mm to plug it into my car stereo. I'm not about to spend $60+ for a rats nest of wires and adapters in my car when a 6" straight through cable would do just fine... and SHOULD cost pennies for them to make and well less than $5 for me to buy.

MS isn't making any accessories worth buying really, and they're not really encouraging anyone to support their product either... if they really wanted to take over apple the real battle is in the Accessory market. Opening the port standard would open the flood gates for thousands of cheap accessories, if they still want to make a profit they can offer some kind of certification process for companies to place an "official zune product" logo on their accessory...

MS needs to realize that being stingy doesn't always make the most money in the long run...

MS often has problems like this, and is usually incredibly slow to learn. I think it has to do with having too much money for their own good. They can afford failure and slow starts, so there's less incentive.

Why don't you make your own cable? Quick googling found me this:

Find out the PinOut for your headunit, and make your own cable.

I hate GameStop and I hate the Zune. So now I guess I can't buy what I don't want where I wouldn't shop in the first place...

</head asplode>

But seriously I don't hate the Zune. I just think its a little... lame.

The Zune doesn't implement MSC??? Hahahah I didn't know that. Microsoft raises the bar again in standards noncompliance.

Make a gaming Zune with achievements and online play and I bet you'd see a huge increase in sales at a game store. Until then though, get it out of there. It doesn't fit.

If Target's on that list, why are their stores slowly clearencing out Zunes?
*edit* Target may just be doing that to older models, but an employee said it was discontinued...but we all know retail employees aren't store representatives. Still, I'm sure if sales decline, more retailers will stop carrying it.

When is Zune coming out in Europe. I like the idea of a Zune Pass to get me into new music. Something my Ipod doesn't really do.

If your really interested in this option, it's not a new concept. Napster has been doing it for years, and it works with several mp3 players and cell phones.
