EU is now Second Largest Videogaming Territory
Posted by XanTium | May 28 23:34 EST | News Category: GamingGeneral

From gamesindustry.biz:
[QUOTE]
According to research compiled by Nielsen Games, the European Union is the second-largest videogaming territory in the world.

Gaming generated EUR 7.3 billion (USD 11.4 billion) in the European Union during 2007, compared with EUR 7.4 billion (USD 11.5 billion) in Asia and EUR 6.9 billion (USD 10.7 billion) in the United States.

The average age of a gamer in the UK is 33 - the highest out of the territories surveyed - and 42 per cent of UK game players have children.

Uh, this article is either wrong or talking about some stat I am unsure of. The United States is the number 1 video game market in the world. Second is Japan. Sorry UK, but you're third.

Want proof? Search google for, with quotes, "largest video game market", "largest video game markets", "video game market", etc. You will find lots of sites with actual statistical figures. They all say U.S. is number 1 and besides, it's a well known fact the U.S. is number 1. All hardware/software manufacturers, developers, and even players know this. What a dumb article by gamesindustry.biz but whatever...

EDIT ::

Oh.. I read the article and it says it's based on SURVEYS -- hahahaha. They're making claims in a news release based on consumer surveys? Wow... Not to mention, like I already said, it's widely known that North America is the #1 market anyway so why would they even begin to believe their stupid survey results? hahahaha.

with everything console related being so overpriced in EU, i can understand that they may be generating more revenue, but that fact alone doesnt make them the the 2nd biggest gaming region

When I first read the full article I would have layed bets on their numbers being wrong as well due to this statement:

"The research, entitled Videogamers in Europe – 2008, was compiled by Nielsen Games based upon surveys of 6000 active gamers, aged 16-49, across 15 countries"

6000 active gamers in such a wide market. That's like me going to NY and surveying 600 disgruntled walkers on how they like the city. The numbers seem a little small and a specialised.

But if we think about it another way, The Asian market has so many more people than any other market. China alone has 1.3 billion people compared to our 0.3 billion. And India has 1.1 billion people. Europe has 0.7 billion people. These regions have more chances of being a larger market than we do.

Country wise, we are number 1

I'm not sure if that is something to be proud of...

I guess so... smile.gif
