Rumor: Opus Xbox 360 Motherboard is Now Shipping
Posted by XanTium | June 2 13:09 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From 8bitjoystick on seattlepi.com:
[QUOTE]
I've gotten word that the "Opus" Xbox 360 motherboard is now shipping and will be included in the repair and refurbish (RnR) operations at Xbox. This means that folks who have their 1st generation "Xenon" Xbox 360 die on them with the Red Ring of Death (or a Core Digital error as Microsoft internally call it) might get a new motherboard. This is a newer "Falcon" generation chip set with a cooler 65 nm CPU but no HDMI port.

Also work on the "Jasper" Xbox 360 is going well and is on track to be out first week in September.

Awesome. I just sent a 3RLOD Xenon back to Microsoft on Friday. Hopefully I'll get an Opus back. I assume we'll be able to tell it's an Opus the same way we can tell if a newer 360 is a Falcon?

well if they give you the new 65nm motherboard then they'll probably ship you a new power supply too.

I'm assuming they'd use the same power connector part as the falcon revision.

I thought the Falcon units will run off the 203W power supply, you just can't use a 175W power supply on a Xenon or Zephyr? If that's the case, they wouldn't have to ship new power supplies.

they wont ship new PSU's. the new opus consoles will run off a 203w power supply just as well as a 175w, so why would they ship them and loose money.

and yes, you should be able to tell the motherboard revision in the same fashion as the falcon, unless they have a new heatsink revision as well

i dont know why they choose to re design the falcon and ship it out as refurbs instead of a re-design of the jasper. this is good news though

Sometimes they ship a PS - I had my non-falcon elite replaced and they sent back a falcon and a new power supply (Funny that they sent another 203w supply though).

I just flashed a 360 2 days ago that was refurbished.

Upon opening it, I noticed that there was an extra heatsink in it (like the new ones with the HDMI output) but this one didn't have the HDMI. Could it have been these new "Opus" revisions?

If so, then .........f*ck. I would love to get my hands back on it. I don't care for HDMI since I have no use for it smile.gif

Most likely not. They've been putting the revised GPU heatsink in the refurbs for a while now. I would think the Opus would not have that heatsink, since the Falcon does not.

all repairs for a while have came with the heatpipe off the gpu so, chances are it wasn't an opus.

Hah, whoops, never mind. Just tried it again, and the 203 plug fits fine.

Well, the 203W power supply plug [the one where you have to hold in a button to remove it] won't fit into my Arcade 360 (which I'm assuming is a Falcon). I was feeling lazy and wanted to use the power supply that was already in place for my Xbox, guess I can't do that.

Although there are apparently at least two 175W power supply models. The one pictured here has model number HP-AW175EF3P LF and says 175W while mine has model number DPSN-168CB A and says 175W MAX.

the 203w power supply will fit a falcon. something may be stopping your 203w PSU from plugging in, like dirt or something stuck in there.

If the reliability of this new motherboard is great, i would asume that Microsoft has been doing their homework.

Let's wait 6/12 month and see if 3ROD Xbox 360 numbers decrease.

Until the, that's great news.

There is nothing stopping them from using the old CPU heatsinks, especially in light of the fact that they are retiring old boards and replacing them with the Opus. It makes sense that they will salvage parts where they can.
