Possible Opus Motherboard Xbox 360 Spotted?
Posted by XanTium | June 14 00:10 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From 8bitjoystick.com:
[QUOTE]
I've gotten word from Xbox Live user xD157UR83Dx who think that he has an Opus motherboard based Xbox 360 on his hand. His Xenon motherboard based Xbox 360 gave him the Red Ring of Death Core Digital error and died on him about two weeks ago. So he shipped it off and a week later he got a newer Xbox 360 with a manufacturing date of "2006-2009" (that is what he said the labels said, he might send us a photo). His new post RnR Xbox 360 had a much quieter DVD drive and a much cooler and quieter fan. I can't verify since I have not seen it with my own eyes and Opus systems can be tricky to identify but there is a pretty good possibility that he has a genuine Opus motherboard based Xbox 360 on his hands. W00t!

The Opus motherboard is a newer Falcon generation Xbox 360 with a 90 nm GPU but a newer cooler 65 nm CPU and a re-designed cooling system. This going to help Microsoft make working playable Xbox system out of all the dead RRODed Xenons that they have at their RnR repair and refurbish facilities. Up until now if you had a dead Xenon based Xbox 360 you would get a re-jiggered resurrected Xenon motherboard back that might still have lingering damage from the death and resurrection process. On Opus motherboard based Xbox 360 is as good as a brand new Xbox 360 on the store shelves now but no HDMI port and you can only get one by having previously dead Xenon sent in.

ya it doesnt seem smart that they would keep the same 90nm gpu (which is the root of the rrod problem) on replacement motherboards back from repair.

im waiting for a box to come out so i will know for sure next month (if it hasn't been proven/disproven by then).

Sorry to be rude but can i get a spot on the front page if i say something like "HEY I GOT A NEW DVD DRIVE IN MY 360, IT SAYS ITS PHILIPS"

because to be honest this seems like alot of just one person saying alot of BS but heh the new opus will be out eventually so w.e it doesnt matter if he has it or not.

so one guy said his xbox runs cooler and quieter after getting it repaired and he jumps to the conclusion that it is an opus without actually checking? seems kinda dumb to me

the thing i dont get is, what about us users with a zephyr motherboard? so far, a V2 sent in for repairs will come back as a V2 and still have the 90nm dies. are they going to start replacing these with falcons? or are we going to get the short end of the stick and be stuck in the middle (having HDMi but a 90nm CPU)?

a 65nm GPU for the 360 hasnt been released yet, so its not like they could add it to the opus anyway. im sure they will upgrade the opus to support a 65nm GPU when the time comes

I laughed my Arse off reading this.

the funny thing is that u probably could, because people are stupid and jump to conclusions (no flame intended) and people probably dont realise that all benq drives say "Phillips-Benq Data Storage"

The GPU on Falcon (and clearly Opus too) is not the same old 90nm GPU that was used on Xenon/Zephyr. It's not 65nm, but it's clearly a physically smaller die. Check out this Anandtech article which has pictures of both the new and old GPU and CPU. The GPU is clearly NOT the same old GPU. Anandtech speculate that it's possibly an 80nm die which makes sense.

Some say the GPU is different, just not 65nm. They probably figure the system was still designed to work with 90nm chips, and they made a cooling error. They probably then conclude that if they have the right cooling solution, the original chips used in the console are fine.

There was an article that said M$ f'd up on the board layout for the GPU,(article is on this site) and went over to ati to remake the board layout, and paid them a lot of money. the pictures on the Anandtech article are probably showing the redesigned layout.
And regarding the new mother board, maybe I'll get one too because my xbox died on me the other night. let me just repost my other post here so you guys can know how I feel about that;
-My xbox just died on me 2 nights ago, but I have another one, and that one died on me too before. My 3 cousins xboxs died on them too and one of them had a broken disc tray that wouldn't open. and I had another one that broke too, but I couldn't send it for repair because the warranty sticker was broke. but is ok I fixed that one my self with help of youtube and a bunch of blogs. and the first one that i sent to repair took like 3 months to get back to me, I waited the four weeks that they told me to wait, and when I call the automatic message said it was sent to me, but then i found out that UPS had lost it and I told them to put a trace on the package because it was missing and they did, and I waited, but then they canceled it because only the shipper can do a trace. then I got with microsoft and got them to put a trace on it, and then they had to wait for UPS to get their act togheter, so I waited, and then they said they would send me a replacement, and I waited, and finally after like 3 months of waiting I got it back, and to add insult to injury they game a one month xbox live card, like that would make up for all the pain of waiting, all the phone calls and the hold time I had to do when calling the M$, UPS. It was very traumatic experience. and the xbox they sent me was used, not even a new one for the one they lost. Hey I think everyone who sends in their broken xboxes get a 1 month xbox live card, if that is so, then i feel even more insulted.

No the pictures on Anandtech show a standard Falcon GPU/CPU. I've had the heatsinks off my own December 2007 manufactured Falcon 360 and the GPU is exactly as their pictures show - physically smaller than the one on Xenon/Zephyr.

Manufactured date of 2006-2009? That makes no sense. I just got back a console from MS myself, and it is not an Opus. I'll believe this when I see pics.
