Microsoft's Greenberg: Wii Customers May 'Graduate' To Xbox 360
Posted by XanTium | July 4 22:18 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamasutra.com:
Talking to Gamasutra Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg, director of product management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, has been commenting on Microsoft's attempts to attract casual gamers, suggesting that Wii customers are "going to want to graduate to an Xbox 360 experience" over time.

When asked about Nintendo's de-emphasizing of hardware power with the Wii, with Gamasutra's interviewer suggesting that "...if they keep going down this path, they don't really need to make a Wii 2", Microsoft's Greenberg pointedly suggested:
"Everyone says that eventually the novelty will wear off, right? I think that a lot of the people that are buying that console today are not people that have generally bought consoles in the past, right?
You see they're not buying games on it, right? They're buying it, it's like something they break out when people come over, and it's maybe a fun thing, but it's almost like the same people that buy a karaoke machine, you know? They're not really buying it for games, they're just buying it as a novelty."
I totally agree, but the "problem" is there are more of those type of people than there are gamers, so in the end the Wii will win every time.

Yes, it's true that the wii is more of a social gathering type of console(ie house parties). It's for the mid 20's to 30's and ups. But that super monkey ball banana blitz is addictive for house parties(girls love it too). I like my 360 more than my wii. Maybe if there were more action shooter first persons for the wii, I'd like it more....but since it's geared toward the non-hardcore gamer it will never take the place of my 360. I'm kind of leaning towards getting a ps3 as well.

And boy isn't that "novelty" paying off.

::edit::
Think previous reply I made was stating the obvious.

After re-reading I guess I do agree 100% lol

To attract the wii users they have to

lower cost
and create MORE games for the little kids (NOT MATURE)
also keep creating those novelty type motion controllers or games to go with them.
Even though the hardcore gamer will not like seeing these novelty type games or hardware
for the 360, that is fine.. because they would not buy them anyway,
they are created for those gamers that will. And yes they will.

agreed, and i am not sure how many people actually are in the market that would consider "graduating" to the 360 after buying a Wii. and the novelty has not really worn off yet, the Wii consoles are still hard to find in most major cities.

i don't foresee buying many Wii games at all, my 360 keeps me quite entertained when i have the time to game...

The post is contradictory. he is more or less saying that Wii buyers are not gamers full on (they don't buy games. It is a casual thing for them..so why would someone who has a Wii but has no games (sports aside) suddenly get hooked on games and want a 360 when they are not playing games anyway.
Also why would MS want these owners if they are not buying games.
He is making an arrogant statement which should read "nobody who buys the Wii ever buys any other games or plays it because they bought the machine as a gimmick , the games for it are a load of shit. We have better family games, the quality of which will turn these people into gamers who purchase lots of games"
Wake up! They may be the type of gamers who have other lives and only want to play at Birthdays etc, so what that is what they are. I mean they bought this as a "Fad" not as a stepping stone to a 360.. or PS3 for that matter.
Copy the motion controller and pretend that everyone will dump their Wii in favour of a 360, but it is not going to happen.
Focus on the real numbers you want. Turn potential PS3 buyers into 360 owners.
The Wii is not in competition for the same buyers, it is a separate entity and very well marketed as well.

This article is full of shit. Sure some people buy a Wii and don't use it all that much, but it is not like software does not sell for the system. Nintendo has many million sellers on the Wii. Sure they lack the hardcore segment of the gaming market, or those are the people that only buy the few big titles, but there are a lot of people buying the system and buying games for it.

Since many people on this forum think a single data point shows meaning like "My Wii collects dust" or "My uncle has one and only has Wii sports" let me add a few points to the contrary. I saw a housewife and her kids go completely nuts with the damn thing. They have all the big Nintendo games aimed at kids, Mario, Smash and 4 fricking wheels for Mario Kart, Guitar Hero, etc. She was the one buying the games and getting all excited about when the next good one was coming out.

Also when looking at software sales the Wii sells more games than the Ps3 each month and almost as much as the 360. Doesn't this seem to imply that the notion that the typical Wii owner does not purchase games?

got a source for the wii attach rate? last i heard it was around 3, with the PS3 just above it and the xbox 360 on 7-8 so i dont see how the wii could be nearly selling as many games as the 360 when the 360 is making record achievements with its attach rate

many people dont buy games for it from what ive seen. i know quite a few people with a wii and only have a few games for it (including wiisports) and im one of them. i havnt purchased a game for my wii in about 12 months and havnt played it in about six months. its mostly just shovelware

This is very true. I have both a Wii and a 360. I never even hook the Wii up unless someone comes over who wants to play it. The games just aren't as fun as the games on the 360, and they definitely don't look or sound as good.

What if I already have all 3 systems? What does that make me?

I guess I bought the systems in the following order though:

360 @ launch
PS3 - 2.5 years after 360
Wii - 1 month after PS3

...although my PS3 is mostly for movies, my 360 gets played the most, and my Wii is pretty much a party console...

What a troll, there's wishful thinking. First they say it's a fad and they're not serious gamers, and now they're saying those same customers want to invest in more gaming hardware to play hard core games?
