Microsoft responds to Xbox 360 Elite RRoD rumours
Posted by XanTium | July 8 12:10 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From techradar.com:
[QUOTE]
Microsoft has today responded to a number of misleading stories in the UK's mainstream press earlier this week regarding alleged 'red ring' problems with the Xbox 360 Elite console that have been experienced by numerous UK gamers.

Microsoft has now issued the following official response to these stories, which appeared in the Daily Mirror and the Daily Telegraph:
"Recent reports in the UK media regarding Xbox 360 contain inaccuracies and pure speculation, as well as news that is a year old.
"Prompted by what Microsoft viewed as an unacceptable number of repairs to Xbox 360 consoles, a year ago Microsoft announced an expansion of its Xbox 360 warranty. Effective 5 July, 2007, any original retail Xbox 360 customer who experiences a general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights is covered by a three year warranty from date of purchase, with all other issues remaining covered by the standard one-year warranty."

Dejavu? Didn't they deny the problems with the original boxes to start with? I seem to remember they did until they forced to cough to it. Knowing the 360, it is certainly not beyond possibility that this correct.

My 9 month or so old elite rrod'd about a month ago. Now on 6th console ( i think!) since release.
The build quality on *all* models is completely wank, imo.
If it wasn't for the fact that all have been repaired/ replaced under warranty (including one that scratched the shit out of most of my discs), I'd have given up on these pieces of shit long ago.
I love the whole 360 'thang', but constant h/w fuck-ups just isn't on. Not impressed wit MS's constant bullshit. They really need to sort this whole situation out - like about 2 years ago!

my original elite (6 months old) gpu died and froze all picture and made fudged up lines and colours go through my screen. Had to get it replaced with, of course, an older model elite. This one scares the sh!t outta me. It's loud as hell when reading a disc and runs a lot hotter than my old 360 and im sure i see framerate drops when it is running really hot.

The heat wouldn't be responsible for the framerate drops, but your drive certainly could be. I've owned plenty of older 360s with GPUs that hit 80* C in game, but the temps don't drop the framerate (though they do contribute to the 3RLOD). Recently I bought a new Falcon 360 and installed a liquid cooling system, but lately games I play that rely on continuous loading off of the disc have had serious problems (like Forza 2 and Halo 3). Now I'm starting to get disc read errors, so the Benq drive is definitely on its way out. Yeah, you know there's a problem when textures just appear in front of you when they should have loaded a long time ago wink.gif .

My 4th 360 was an Elite with the new heatsink and it recently RROD'd on me. It was the shortest lived 360 of all the ones I've gone through (11 months) and this past year was probably the least I've played compared to the previous 2 - probably averaged only a few hours a week.

Hopefully this 65nm chip on the Falcon MB will be better...not counting on it though. I thought for sure the new heatsink would extend the life at least by a little bit...obviously not the case.

When anyone runs and buys an Elite because its newer... I always warn them...

The new designs are NEW meaning not enough time has passed to get a sense of their reliability.

The overarching design flaws are still present, I am sure better cooling helps minimize the problem but it does not eliminate it. Heat is only one of the factors in solder creep.

the 360 will error before it reaches a temp high enough to have FPS drops. if you get frame rate drops, it usually is due to the DVD laser, the media you use (if its a backup) and overheating/cracked solder on the RAM

Microsoft can deny all they want - Our Elite is less than 8 months old, started crashing a few days ago then gave 3 flashing lights... Back to shop to no doubt have it sent away n be without GTA IV + Forza for a while. grr.gif grr.gif grr.gif
