Sony: MGS4 Not Coming to 360 - Only Possible on PS3
Posted by XanTium | July 15 21:33 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From mcvuk.com:
[QUOTE]
CEO of SCEA Jack Tretton talks up PS3's power as he shoots down this week's big rumour

Following fervent speculation that Metal Gear Solid 4 would follow Final Fantasy in becoming a PlayStation-associated brand that moves onto Xbox 360, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton has argued no other console could handle the technical demands of Konami's the Konami title.

"Metal Gear Solid is not only exclusive on PS3 - it's only possible on PS3, thanks in part to Blu-Ray."

This of course is BS. A media type has nothing to do with game design but only how it is distributed. If he could just finally say the words "MGS4 will never come to another platform" I would believe him. But yet hes not working for Konami. So he can publicly speculate all he wants. Unless I hear it from Konami, we just sit and wait for some "real" confirmation.

MGS4 kicks ass no matter what system its on. Period.

'...it's only possible on PS3...'

Really, so the size of the game is the reason it is exclusive?!

What a joke!

Even if a game is 45GB, you could easily fit it onto 3 or 4 DVDs for a 360 version.

Sony can never be too full of themselves.

I wonder how Konami feels. I mean, Sony just publicly stated that Konami cannot even get passed a media limitation where all other devs could. What an insult! Especially for an old school company with experience.

EXACTLY!!! instead of doing another install like it does on the PS3 change the disc! problem solved. split the levels onto different discs.

Besides that, last I'd heard the slower access times for blu-ray disks required developers to redundantly add the same level data with each level. At least he didn't say something else stupid like "because the game was coded from the ground up for the PS3". I'd seen that excuse before, even though COD4 and GTA4 were successfully recoded for different platforms as well.

I'll overlook Tretton's long line of idiotic statements for now. If he had said that it wasn't coming to the 360 because Sony had lined up the contract, or talked about the high level of physics calculations making a 360 port highly problematic for example, his above statement might mean something. But all I see here is a weak attempt at damage control. Despite FF XIII being developed through a platform designed for easy porting, the "coming exclusively for PS3" message when an earlier trailer ended on made the E3 announcement a surprise. With MGS4, at this point, it may only be a matter of time if there's no contract in place preventing it.

Thankfully it's not up to Sony or Jack if if it comes to other platforms with Konami being a third party and all.

Who do I believe Jack Tretton or the developers themselves?

"Hideo Kojima: Yes, that's technically possible. I want to express, first of all, it's not that I don't like Xbox or 360. It's just that last year, our hands were really tied to MGS3, so the other Konami developers were able to get their hands on the 360 tools and hardware earlier."

"Hideo Kojima: Maybe some nuance or a small details here and there might be different, but I feel that hardware is no longer a matter."

After FFXIII announcement I say anything third party is possible.

Marketing is easy when you assume your consumers are idiots who will believe tech speak from executives...

*SIGH* when will Sony execs figure out that people don't just blindly believe whatever they say anymore.

It would be easier to port to other systems if the game wasn't 90% Movie clips and 10% game play. I'm so sick of the video clips I have yet to complete the first act and I've had it for atleast 3 weeks now.

MS did announce that we could do full installs of games on the HDD. Maybe it will ship with two discs. One you install, and the other in the tray the whole time?

its quite possible to do it on the 360. MGS4 is 29Gb's in size with 1/4 of the data being uncompressed 7.1 audio, which could easily be compressed along with other data, and the removal of duplicate data (if present) would certianly reduce the size down enough to fit on at most 3 discs

In the end it's up to Konami where the game ends up. I would love to see it on 360 as it would save me $400-500 which I'm all for. I do think it'll come eventually but I don't expect any sort of announcement within a year of its initial release, so E3 2009 we may see something depending on whether sales have picked up or not.
