The Impetus Behind The New Xbox Experience
Posted by XanTium | July 16 18:41 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gizmodo.com:
[QUOTE]
"Why does this work in Wal-mart" Marc Whitten asked, rhetorically. He's the General Manager for Xbox LIVE and the guy in charge of the new Xbox 360 dashboard system known as The New Xbox Experience. "Visual is a better way of exploring...you're actually good at discerning things visually." And if such is the case, it makes sense why Microsoft has ditched the endless lines of icons and text in their Xbox 360 setup, opting for a minimal experience not so different from Apple's Front Row.

The current Xbox 360 dash (the blade version) has a problem. While there is plenty of functionality under the hood, the development team can't simply add a new blade any time they wanted to bring new content. Meanwhile, Xbox LIVE hopes to bring users more dynamic content on a daily basis. Something had to give, so Microsoft ditched their dashboard.

Basically all they wanted was more ad space. "dynamic content on a daily basis" = even more adverts to annoy you on a daily basis. Makes you wounder why we have to pay for Live when Microsoft will be raking in the profits from big advertising deals.

One thing I did notice that there were no ads on the front-end of the dashboard now which I think is good. I'm actually really into this new dashboard but still on the fence about Avatars.

The first 3 windows (or whatever you want to call them) after the one with avatar and game in drive, "games library", "music library" and "video library" all show branding of some sort and all three are visible at all times while in that channel. In the demo they're only showing the last 3 of whatever you've been using but I wouldn't be surprised if this "dynamically" changes to show items you might want to purchase on market place.

Next is the Spotlight channel which is all advertising. Then its the Primetime channel which is all advertising. Then its the Game channel which displays your games AND ones Microsoft thinks you might be interested in. Then theres the Community channel which will probably show branding of some sort when it goes live. Then theres the Video channel which is mostly advertising. So looks like a dashboard of mostly adverts to me.

I get that on my machine too, because, purposefully, I keep the bloody thing far away from an internet connection happy.gif

Here is to hoping a decent solution comes up for using 3rd party hard drives, gonna need one bigger than 20G (er, make that 13G) if they take the ad content into disconnected states.

It makes one wonder, since your paying for the ISP connection AND paying for the LIVE account (if you have Gold), why you can't simply turn off the ADs. Maybe some lawyer can find something in that.

so they can't add a new blade, but they can completely overhaul the dash to a completely new system. makes perfect sense.

It does make perfect sense if you've ever built an application interface or even a website.

I actually really like the current dash but I wish it was more customizeable (fonts, font colors, et.). That said, I think the "New Experience" looks pretty cool and I look forward to it. I also think the avatar thing could be cool, BUT what about all these gamerpics I've bought and downloaded? They now have no use? I feel cheated...

You can use you old themes with the new dash... http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=656051
and the same goes for your gamerpics apparently.

I think the new dash looks good. I could care less about the stupid avatars.

The coolest thing about this is that when i am gaming which is 95% of the time I am on my console i will have the oldstyle blade menu repackaged smaller and accessible from just tapping the guide button I love this feature. I will use this so much more then the dashboard. I can't recount how many times i have been in game and needed to get to something to have to go back to the dash and then reload the game again a few minutes later. I can't wait for this update.

1+, sometimes it's better to build something from scrath than modify an existing aplication/interface.

PS: I like the new dash, it's simple, neat & easy to use. I'm sure you will be able to use the advanced options on the system, but i'm sure you will need a few more clicks (or not)
