Square Enix: Final Fantasy XIII Going Multi-Platform Is Game Changer For Biz
Posted by XanTium | July 17 22:07 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamasutra.com:
[QUOTE]
Many in the industry have viewed the announcement that Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII will go multi-platform - appearing on the Xbox 360 as well as the PlayStation 3 in the West - as a crucial apex in the game hardware wars.

Therefore, Gamasutra asked Square Enix senior vice president of sales and marketing Shinji Hashimoto whether he felt that the announcement was, of sorts, a turning point for the game industry.
"More than a turning point, you could say that perhaps this is a change in trends for the game industry as a whole," he offered. "In the past, a single platform would be at the top, and the others would not be so close.
"But now each console has many users, so this has kind of dictated the way that Final Fantasy will evolve in the future, and why it's being released on multiple consoles at once."

So how long before MGS4 appears on 360? Konami release other games on the 360, so obviously the choice is theirs.

Or do you believe Sony pay them to keep MGS4 exclusive?

Yes, Sony would pay to keep it exclusive if they can. It may not be that simple, though.

Final Fantasy XIII is appearing on the 360 because their development process for it was flexible enough. MGS4, however, was built *for* the PS3, essentially meaning the bulk of the code would need to be re-written for a PPC arc. There's plenty of reasons we won't see MGS4 for the 360, but if Konami wants it to go multi-platform, and somebody's willing to re-write the code, After-all, it's happened for certain games in the past, and it's a high profile title.

Would this FF13 be ok for a new player, I've never played the FF series, well I never played the MGS series until 4 and I found that hard to adapt to, do you think I would enjoy FF even though I have never played it? I probably would get it on the PS3 though since it's exclusive to that really.

you'll enjoy it if you find hitting a single button to advance pages and pages of terrible dialog between sets of extremely long and overly dramatic cut-scenes as riveting as the average Japanese gamer does.

a turning point for the game industry.

I think its just another testament to how expensive these "next-gen" games have become to develop. Publishers need to release on as many systems as possible to recoup these costs. Additionally, I think it shows how badly Squeenix mismanages their funding, that they've overspent soooo much they now feel it necessary to re-gear this flagship title from 'strictly PS3' to other hardware.

Sucks to be Sony. Along with MGS4, this could've been a big system seller for PS3 hardware. Lost sales push opportunity. Now FF13 is "just another" game title.

square was multi platform in the past and never would have gone sony only rember al those snes rpgs a good bulk of them where square. when they made ff7 it was orignaly a n64 dd game when dd got scraped and they could not fit it on a cart they made the ps1 version and of course ff7 was the best of all time and sales rocketed past anything they hoped for so they stuck with the playstation brand threw ps1/ps2. ps3 is only doing ok in the market and very poorly in the games market people buy it as a blueray player first and a gaming console second wile other consoles are the reverse. it makes sense to leave the playstation elclusiv behind them at this time. like every other game company has done so far.

i dont think the 360 or the ps3 are gonna pull ahed in this war at all wii will smoke em both and they will stay around 50/50.

sony learned there lession a tad to late to save the ps3 and jump it to number 1.

Perhaps that has something to do with the fact that the other 2 don't play Blu-Ray discs.
By the way the old it's only any good for Blu-ray is past it's sell by date now. I suppose the boost created by MGS4 (Game) means nothing?

this can definitely be considered a change in the industry because people usually are stuck with old habits.
and FF always was the best.
that could be MSs way/door into japan.
so it would definitely mean a lot.
...poor sony. but thats what you get when you're disappointing everybody so often.

It's not happening in Japan http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=655835
PS version is exclusive in Japan.
MS copying trophies (medals) adding little avatars like the Wii and getting a PS former exclusive is hardly going to change the world and it won't give MS any sort of headway in Japan.
I don't think it is that big a deal. In Japan it may have been.

Well my friends only got the PS3 for Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid, everything else that's decent is crossplatform
