More Details about 'New Xbox Experience' Game HDD Install
Posted by XanTium | July 18 14:53 EST | News Category: Xbox360
From gamespot.com:
One of the not-so-cosmetic changes in the fall update will be the ability to let you play your games directly from the hard disk. The new feature will let users install all of the game content directly onto the hard drive to improve game load times. Microsoft reports that it has seen a 30 percent improvement in load times in internal testing. As an interesting data point, Microsoft went out of its way to tell a group of reporters that the full Devil May Cry 4 hard disk installation took roughly 10 minutes on the Xbox 360. The installation took twice as long when we conducted our own installation tests on the PlayStation 3. Another side benefit of having games installed on the hard disk is reduced noise, since the optical disc no longer needs to spin up. However, you will still need to have the game disc in your optical drive while you're playing it, presumably as a piracy check.
hell yeah.
that is really cool and actually makes the 120GB hard drive almost worth the money. well, not really but at least gives people a real reason to have one.

Well I have 70GB free last time I checked, guess that will be mostly game installs now , I hope dev studios go back a repatch their games to take advantage of this in someway, I just hope it's optional (what about them Arcade users?), it kind bugs me on the PS3 you do have to wait 20mins or so, if it's quick and slick then thats cool.

Just ordred a 120gb wd scorpio drive for £30. I'm gonna use the lovely hddhacker tool to make my own 360 drive. I'll be damned if i'm gonna pay the UK retail price of £130 for one.
Great idea MS. I'm assuming the installs are quicker because the 360 drive spins much faster than the ps3's blueray drive.

Yeah I am really happy too although it really it bitter sweet in that you still have to have the disc in.
BTW, I'd imagine new games (meaning games out in 2009) will likely -really- take advantage. If the game was coded to check and see if it's on the hdd or disc, it could potentially have a much better than 30% faster load rate. Potentially, it could be 75% faster imo if the game was developed to really take advantage of it.
But what if you're playing on Live and some ppl in the server are playing off the disc? Well, it would likely still take as long to load the map and start the match for everyone. So IMO I think this load benefit will really only take advantage for single player games.

Think of it this way. MS has already test driven the system you can play games with map pack loading from your hard drive and presently you can play from a disc that has the map pack included. COD4 and GRAW2 have limited edition disks with the map packs preloaded. There is no delay or lag with users.
