From oxm.co.uk:
General Manager of XBox Live has spoken of even more new features he expects to come to the Xbox Live dashboard - including the ability to control your console over the internet, and ultimately a hardware-free future. He also confirmed that hard drive installs will work with all current and future Xbox games.
Speaking to OXM at E3, Marc Whitten said that the new update is "only the beginning" of the social networking features that Microsoft want to deploy.
He also said that we can expect future updates to include the ability to switch on your Xbox from any PC and download content to it remotely - "at some point in the future you'll hear more from us about that."
All old news except the turning on/off remotely, which was an assumed feature by myself and friends anyway when it was discussed last week about remote downloading. So all in all, less intriguing article than I originally thought. QUOTE(xmod4u @ Jul 22 2008, 02:32 AM) "So we are slowly turning the console world into PC's"
Any latest new features from M$ is always a step closer to PC. Slowly changing the world of consoles into a mass network of bull crap! that they control, I might add. This is not sitting with me well at all, I miss the good ol days of gaming my friends, its just not the same anymore.
thanks M$!

Uhhhhhh, you okay there? The 360 is still very much a gaming machine. These new features do nothing to take away from the gaming experience. For you to say you don't like these new and potential features is basically saying 'technology sucks' and to that I can only laugh. Lighten up for Christ's sake.

Wow... maybe you shouldn't have bought a 360 and stuck with your Genisis and SNES if you're so afraid of progress. "I hate these fancy poli-gones. Don't want 'em, don't need 'em no sir."

um.. so you can't game with your friends anymore? seems to me you can do it still, you can even do it from across the world now. now that i'm getting older, having friends over to game is less possible since half my friends moved out of state. if it wasn't for the xbox and xboxlive, online gaming would probably be nonexistent. so yeah, sometimes ms adds shit that i don't care about to xbox and xboxlive.. but to say it ain't the same and that you miss the good ol days is pure bullshit.. we have it so much better now.. especially with live arcade and leaderboards putting some competition back in gaming. imo ms has done a lot for gaming.

QUOTE(halcyonx12 @ Jul 21 2008, 11:17 PM) Those hard drive installs seem like a bad idea, it's almost guaranteed to get exploited and be used for piracy. Everyone wants their games to load faster and have bigger games, but the way to do that is hard drive installs, not hard drive imaging. Although if they can get it to work fine without ever being exploited (somehow) then it would be a nice option to have, like mandatory managed copy for video games or something.
Why is almost guaranteed to be exploited for piracy? The disc must be authenticated against in order for someone to play the game. Plus, Arcade and original Xbox titles played off of the hard drive can't be pirated, right? (Well, besides the DRM copy tool, and apparently devkits can download them for free? But those things are by design.) Worst thing it leads to is people using one disc for multiple consoles at once, and I don't think that's a huge concern for Microsoft. Also, I'm not sure how much I like the Xbox being remotely turned on. I'm imagining it would be done Wii style rather than wake on LAN to allow download from anywhere (the 360 would periodically connect to check if it's supposed to download something). Well, it wouldn't be too bad if it doesn't take more power. I was assuming things would start download when you next turned your 360 on. EDIT: Oh, the full interview makes it a bit more clear. What I said is how it will work, the remote wake thing is supposed to be in an update after that. Same as IPTV and clan support. This post has been edited by ssj4android: Jul 22 2008, 04:19 AM

Guys! Funny stuff, but ya taking me the wrong way. First off, if the online thing is the only card your giving M$, then they got squat! Ok, Xbox live is the bomb today, but its not like they came up with the idea. SO bravo for buying a great concept. Right away, snes and genesis are brought up, wonder why. Look, im ok with technology going forward dummies, but I don't need my 360 to make toast for me! its a game system, lets stick to it, maybe it will be better to concentrate on that only... And what does "hardware free" mean ? no more faulty systems... but how... yeah, whatever. and of course Im ok, why wouldn't I be ? this is a forum right ? all in good fun.

Not really, the only way that this could be exploited is if signed software was developed allowing you to FTP games from your PC to your 360, I mean, if someone already has their console chipped so they can load the game directly to the hard drive from the disc, they're really not losing anything that they haven't already lost. And in order for such software to be developed the 360 would first have to be hacked, which would then mean MS would have a LOT more on their hands than worrying about people illegally copying games to the hard drive. The only concern with this feature I see is people renting games and then loading them onto the hard drive and having them still be playable even after the rental is returned, and I'm sure MS already has an idea to fix that.

hm.. clearly they didn't come up with the idea, but if it wasn't them who pushed it to the next level with xboxlive, who would it have been? dreamcast? ps2? ps3? yeah right. we would still be so far behind where we are now. and even if that was the only 'card' ms had, that's a fuckin ace of spades if you ask me.
