PS3 native dev makes for 'better' Xbox 360 games
Posted by XanTium | July 30 16:06 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamesindustry.biz:
[QUOTE]
In an interview at this year's E3 Media & Business Summit, Steinberg [Sony Computer Entertainment America's VP of product marketing] explained how the ten-year plan for the company's flagship console had given the PS3 a strong foundation, and while it was the late arrival on the next-gen scene, developers were starting to see the potential.

"We see the development just now starting to get going," he said. "We're now in our third and fourth generations with first party, and that will start to create some distance with the competition - from our standpoint - but as the third parties begin to move their development to native PS3 and port down to other platforms, they'll start to see their games' fidelity getting better and better - and in fact I think even Xbox 360 games will start to look better as a result.

Well at least they don't brag about how good they currently are unlike MS with their boatload of press releases just recently and yet the Wii is still the best in terms of sales.

I'm personally looking for Little Big Planet, I think it will be a huge hit. I'm still finding MGS4 very hard to complete, got onto Act3 just yesterday. For sure 360 has a massive portfolio, but there are some nice little games coming to the PS3 like MAG looks pretty good. Warhawk is still awesome to and I think Home is going to blow Avatars out of the water.

Still competition is good for the consumer cool.gif

To my memory 90% of the video comparisons for games that are available on both the 360 and ps3 are in favor of the 360

He is talking situation where PS3 is developed as the lead platform and ported to the 360. Not simply existing Xplats where simultaneous development or ports from 360 to PS3

the result of moving to native PS3 would be a loss of quality for 360 games.

A bit more of an explanation as to why you believe this may help.
Who do you currently develop for?

Kinda makes sense. If you let the geniuses design for the most complex/fickle architecture and let the interns do the porting you're gonna get better results than if you design for the "simple" 360 and let the interns scratch their heads at the SPE's.

I would start a flamewar over this but I don't have my 3 sided die to decide which console to flame.

That is more or less my take on the quick and simple meaning to the article. develop the complex stuff and the port is made easier giving flexibility to improve some stuff on the easier port.

I have both systems, and have compared every new game thats on both systems, so from PERSONAL experience and watching them both, there is no way in hell the 360 is better then the ps3 counterparts...yes true maybe a few games, but i prefer gta4 on ps3 over 360 by a landslide!, same goes for hl2, and unreal tournament!

even assassins creeed i felt was better on ps3....but thats just me, i love my 360 still dont get me wrong im not saying ps3 is superior...im jsut saying those games look better on a ps3 as to 360 (compared using HD)

** yes im aware my gamercard shows i've played hl2 and all that, but i have younger siblings/friends so i let them have that one instead smile.gif**

And that is EXACTLY what the article is stating. When porting from the 360 to the ps3, the port looks crappy. BUT port from the ps3 to the 360, and both look great, including the port.
Dev's are catching onto this, and learning. They want all consoles to look good on a multi-plat release, so that they can make more money. Dev's don't care about fanboys wanting one to look better over the other.

I have to say I think developing on the PS3 first then porting to 360 may indeed result in better looking 360 games... and almost certainly better looking PS3 games.

When given a kit that says "To draw a triangle call function X" it kind of makes devs lazy, they all draw traingles the same way, are limited to the same issues and don't ever think of a better way to do it.

When handed something complex and tricky like programing for the PS3, it's a pain for devs because they have to do a lot from scratch. But the end result, like anything else, is that it opens possibilities for creative thinking to do things better than they were done before.

Whether these tricks and optimizations can be ported onto another console is still left to be seen, but I can definitely say that I have always felt that the DC and the Xbox games all had a slight cookie cutter, not as unique feel as the games developed for the PS consoles.

Anything that makes my gaming better I am all for... my fear is that these tricks might not port well and thus leave the 360 versions crippled in the end.

Hardware Sales.

3rd party software isn't selling crap on Wii.

LOL at this guy. MGS4 was a cake walk. If you are having trouble with that game you must really suck at it. Sounds to me your just a MS hater. All companies brag about how they are doing. I remember sony saying this "We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even it didn't have games,"
