Microsoft: We Want More Exclusives
Posted by XanTium | August 1 19:46 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From edge-online.com:
[QUOTE]
Microsoft, which has been able to capture some important (timed) third-party exclusives such as Rock Band 2 and BioShock, continues to chase more exclusive deals to differentiate Xbox 360 from competitors.

Asked about Xbox 360's weaknesses, Microsoft interactive entertainment boss Don Mattrick replied, "We'd love to have more exclusive hits on our box, absolutely. Are we investing in that? Yes we are. Does that take a lot of time? Yes it does."

Microsoft's exclusive deals go beyond the boxed product. Grand Theft Auto IV and Fallout 3 will both offer exclusive downloadable content for the Xbox 360 versions. PS3 players wanting an extended experience for those games are out of luck.

Yeah, I think that was announced at the e3. However I don't think Bioshock is an exclusive...

Badly written. Many people don't distinguish between "exclusive" and "timed-exclusive". The author also makes the assumption that there will be no DLC for the PS3 versions of GTAIV and F3, which they've already stated otherwise (at least on GTA). While MS will have exclusive add-on content, it doesn't mean the PS versions aren't going to have any. The content may even be similar, but have enough fundamental differences to call it "exclusive", or could even (coincidentally) be "timed-exclusive".

It's a Microsoft exclusive and is only available on 360 and PC.

Most games I play, I need more explosives laugh.gif
I think more and more the days of exclusives on either machine are numbered. As companies look to squeeze extra money from games, later releases on a different platform usually mean they can do just that.

Bioshock is only a timed exclusive. It is coming out on the PS3 in October.

agreed. "timed exclusives" may become the new norm instead of pure exclusives...then the battle (and monetary issues) will be debating the length of the exclusivity...

MS are just complaining that they have a poor 1st party showing. Exclusives are bad for gamers in general. The more choice the better. It's best if a game is available on all platforms. Then consoles can compete on price and features, not only on exclusives and first party games.

if there were no exclusives, then what would be the point of different formats as they all would just be the same? everyone would just buy the cheapest one and they would have the exact same access to the same games that you would get with the most expensive one. thats not much of a competition

competition is good for gamers, is forces lower prices, better features, and higher quality games

Both of you make good points. Of course from a business perspective exclusives are quite necessary with arguably some benefits to the customer mentioned. ff13 losing exclusivity was big loss to Sony, Japan exclusive means little if the 360 version isn't going to sell there anyway.
