Inside the 60GB Xbox 360 - Bottom RAM Chips Gone
Posted by XanTium | August 6 20:14 EST | News Category: Xbox360

Benheck got his hands on a new 60GB (Pro) Xbox 360 console.
Essentially it's nothing more than a 20GB 'Pro' console with the external HDD swapped out to a 60GB model. However opening new SKUs is always interesting as they often have a recent manufacturing date. Benheck's 60GB 360 was made on June 20th 2008.
Motherboards are probably the same across all different SKUs, but the date a certain motherboard revision goes in production can differ per factory plant and production line.

So what's interesting here? ... the motherboard has HANA/HDMI, 90nm GPU, 65nm CPU, 175W PSU, the GPU heatsink with the 'addon' and the new CPU heatsink without the copper heatpipe ... so basically it looks like a normal Falcon board. The DVD drive found in this console was the new Lite-On DG-16D2S we're starting to see more and more these days.
But Benheck found a difference ... the RAM chips at the bottom of the board are gone (so the 4 chips on the top must have doubled in capacity).

Ah, I have found a difference! This is the first Xbox 360 I have seen that does not have the bottom-mounted memory chips. I had heard on the interwebs these have been a heat problem in the past (or moreso that people fixed problems by improving their heat sink to the case) so I'm sure this will help performance as well as aid cost reduction.

I am surprised, I was under the impression that the new 60gb would come with the dual 65nm chips.

Over half a year later, and people still report that the GPU is 90nm. Good grief.

I'm not surprised it doesn't have the new chipset since it was made in June.

Didn't it say in another article that the new chipset (jasper i think its called) was coming out in september? I guess with the several month lag between manufacturing and retail, maybe it'll take a little after september before jasper's make it on the shelf?

Hmmm, hopefully this will address the death of xboxes due to the RAM chip problem once and for all.
It is disappointing that after all this time that MS hasn't spent the R&D money to bring out a smaller, quieter 360.

With their supposed push into the mainstream and to 'own europe' they will need more than a bigger hard drive.

If we added more RAM the 360 wouldn't recognize it and use it, or would crash.

Besides, adding BGA RAM wouldn't be worth the cost. Getting the shit balled or w/e...

it was supposed to be released in august, of course this means the console manufactured in august not the consoles on the shelve.

it will probably be late august before we see the news and early-mid September before they make it to retail shelves (in most areas).

3rlod error 0110 (RAM) was only a major problem with the samsung chips (which where majorly replaced in late 06) and has since dropped down to the 3rd most common error code proceeded by 0102 and 0020 which are both problems with the inside bga of the gpu(away from the ram).

absolutely.. wink.gif
we just need a modified bios "which doesn't exist yet" to bypass the RAM limit
and I guess you have to use special equipment to add this kind of RAM

I knew that the 1gig mod wasn't going to be as easy as a desolder/resolder job. Too bad.

I dub this board "Falcon mk2" biggrin.gif

I highly doubt this has anything to do with making the board reliable, it's more likely that since 2005 the cost of ram has dropped dramatically and it is now more cost effective to have 4x128mb chips instead of 8x64mb.

I've seen many rod xboxes and only a couple of those were 0110.

It's nice to know they are keeping cost down, and even if it's only a minor upgrade, 4 chips of ram produce less heat than 8, we know that keeping heat low inside the xbox is very important.

I'm still waiting to buy mine, after they switch completely to 65nm.
