Microsoft Enviroment video reveals datacenter server numbers - Xbox LIVE?

Have you ever wondered how Microsoft provide those services for you? XBOX LIVE for instance surely must need more horsepower than a general website would need, wouldnt it? :) It's probably safe to bet that all of Microsoft's online operations doesn't run off a single server in the basement of Gates' house. However, a recent promotional video produced by Microsoft's Environmental Sustainability group may have accidentally spilled the beans.

Some quick stats: 15 datacenters hosting 148,357 servers sitting on 17,406 racks consuming 72,500KW of utility power as of the end of January 2008 (as indicated by the bar chart).

On the same page there's also an interesting graph showing the distribution of servers per "property". Live Search is in the clear lead with approximately 75,000 (50%) of the servers pushing out those less-than-desirable search results, followed by Hotmail. The other notable property occupying a large chunk of the servers would be "other" (appropriately named), which one could assume be dedicated to XBOX Live services and the like.

I couldn't see/hear it in the video, was it on one of the graphs or something?

Edit lol it was on the graph, now Sony will build servers galore lol XD!

It would have made me very happy if in fact all the servers were in the basement of Gate's house.

OK Seriously ... this "news item" is about the saddest example of bad reporting. Here are a few FACTS

Most of the XBOX live datacenters ARE NOT apart of the MSN datacenters.

Search is ALOT more than 50% of the datacenters

That graph includes about 20 XBL servers (its a bridge service for MSN messenger.)

The actual numbers and the real numbers are about 20% off (lets call it the managments way of showing progress where there is none.

the poster of this "news item" should consider a career at CNN ... with such investigative reporting an all

While I had always been interested to know the stats about live's servers, this is not it. This is pretty much a guess at the facts. We got some information, but there is no proof at all that those specs are close.
