Peter Moore warns against suing file-sharers
Posted by XanTium | August 21 22:03 EST | News Category: GamingGeneral

From gamesindustry.biz:
[QUOTE]
EA Sports boss Peter Moore has said he doesn't support the move to sue consumers for illegal downloading - warning, "It didn't work for the music industry."

Moore was speaking to GamesIndustry.biz at the Leipzig Games Convention, following the announcement that five games companies are taking legal action against 25,000 file-sharing internet users.
"I'm not a huge fan of trying to punish your consumer," he said. "Albeit these people have clearly stolen intellectual property, I think there are better ways of resolving this within our power as developers and publishers."

According to Moore, there are lessons to be learned from the experiences of other industries. "If we learned anything from the music business, they just don't win any friends by suing their consumers," he observed. "Speaking personally, I think our industry does not want to fall foul of what happened with music."

what could this be - a literal voice of reason in relation to the P2P world?

yeah, suing the consumers is just a plain stupid move - the "fear" tactic has not worked well at all for either the RIAA or the MPAA so far.

the obvious solution is to improve the distribution methods and price of current entertainment media...

the other solution, stop worrying about the 2% of gamers that actually download games. do they not realize that it is such a small % or the people playing..

While he doesn't work for MS.. this has pretty much always been MS's stance on the issue...

despite the bans, and cat&mouse games do you ever remember MS suing anyone?

sure there were a few raids but those weren't MS behind them... almost always Nintendo or Sony.

I recall reading a paper by Bill Gates about how he WANTS people to pirate his products... he qualified it by saying that he would rather people pirate his products than his competitors, because down the road when the product evolves into something that's harder to pirate they're much more likely to become paying customers.

Think about how that played out with the Xbox... people pirated, so they designed Xbox live such that it was impossible to play pirated games online, then they continually made Xbox live better and better and more important to the experience that a lot of people who pirated xbox 1 games are now paying customers on the Xbox 360...

and there's no negative backlash from ridiculous courtroom bullying.

I thought there was a hack for xbox1 that would have been invisible and live proof... i want to say it was a dvd firmware hack that was not released because the guys who came up with it realized how devastating it would be to the xbox...

I am glad someone up high finally came out and said scare tactics are bad. I have to agree and think with connectivity and the level of checking it can and will allow, suing over piracy is just not the direction to go.

"After that Moore went on to present all the cool features of his firmware flashed 360 and his massive collection of ripped EA Sports game..."

Wasn't there something a long time ago where at some Xbox Team meeting someone brought in a modded Xbox 1 and said something along the lines of, "What can we learn from the people hacking the console?"

Imagine if MS did business like the RIAA...Yah...It would have been released.

That right there is the kind of thinking that is going to sell consoles. Just imagine how popular the PSP would be if Sony actually supported the modders instead of trying to shut them out.

Suing the pirate that is just playing their games or using their software is NOT the way to go.

However I DO firmly believe suing the pirate that is SELLING their pirated things IS the way to go.

Not suing for selling something that COULD be used for pirating (ie. modchips), but selling actual piarated games/software/movies.

Didn't gates himself break copy protection when he was working in is garage? (wasn't it too a game console?) Thought I read something like that loooong time ago. If so at least he remembers where he came from smile.gif And that worked into his business.

I have a modded 360 and the internet savvy to get any game I want for free (theoretically speaking, of course), and yet my current gen (retail) games collection includes:
Halo 3 w/ DLC
GTA IV
Call of Duty 4 w/ DLC
Bioshock
Mass Effect
Rock Band w/ DLC
Geometry Wars 1 & 2
Braid
Rez HD
The Orange Box (PC)

... and I've only owned my 360 for 6 months.

These are just the games I still have; I have bought a more than a dozen others that I have resold.
I love games and I would not be too happy if the industry turned to lawsuits to stop p2p. Moore is exactly right in saying pirates are still gamers, and instead of turning against them publishers should find new ways to stop them/collect revenue (like DLC, digital distribution, less craptastic games, etc.).

I have heard the same rumor, but I have no basis behind it :/

Peter moore is wise, I really wish he stayed with the 360 division but hopefully there will be a noticeable improvement in the EA game franchises he looks over...

instead of suing should just do what the feds did to me . . . just give a lecture that "it's like stealing from walmart" . . . then . . . take away the copies of things i had . . .

pretty sad when the feds don't really know where you live and have to ask your mother lol .

But anyways, not owning a working 360 , results in not being able to buy or pirate games anyways , so either way . . . no worries on either end.

I'm glad to hear this, even though it's illegal I just don't see what benefit suing the consumers has. All it does is bring negative PR and ruin some lives.

I know that I'm treading thin water and people generally flame for this, but usually the company isn't losing money to downloaders anyway, because odds are that if they are downloading they either: a) cannot afford the game or cool.gif wouldn't have bought it anyway.

Yah...It would have been released.

http://www.joystiq.com/2006/02/03/original...roughly-hacked/ That one i think never was but c4eva did later release a dvd firmware hack for xbox 180... I think it was somewhat of a foundation for the 360 hack.

I wouldn't exactly agree that people can't afford games or wouldn't buy them anyways. I think it's more like they'd rather not pay for them if they don't have to. I'm sure many people would end up buying the really popular games like Halo 3 and Gears of War at the very least (mainly for the hype and the online play). I know a guy who would mod xboxes when I was in high school and the people he would mod for used to buy games, but stopped because he was selling games to them for much less than what they cost in a store. That's the kind of piracy that really hurts the industry.
