Japanese Xbox 360 sales fall back to Earth
Posted by XanTium | August 23 01:27 EST | News Category: Xbox360

Well that was fast. It seems like just last week we were reporting the bizarre news that the Xbox 360 had suddenly leapfrogged the PS3 in weekly Japanese sales, selling nearly 25,000 units on the strength of Tales of Vesperia's release. Things are back to normal this week, though, with Microsoft's system once again sitting comfortably in last place with 7,258 units sold. Don't get us wrong, this is still a relatively strong number considering the system's historically low sales and reportedly widespread supply problems in Japan.

One word,............ Sony. Or Nintendo. Japanese buy there own products over anything American made. Sony is there first choice no matter what.

That's actually a simplistic and inaccurate point of view. It's obvious that the Japanese market is vastly different than other markets, and the sales bumps from Blue Dragon and Tales of Vesperia show that the Xbox 360 can move consoles if they release games that appeal to that market - but the vast majority of titles for the Xbox 360 simply do not.

To say that they simply wouldn't buy an Xbox 360 for the sole reason that it is American made is proven inaccurate by the enormous success of the iPod in Japan. Like the rest of the world, the iPod dominates the mp3 player market in Japan, far outselling even the mighty Sony on their home turf.

if the Xbox 360 had more than a token amount of games geared to the Japanese market, it could be more competitive. Simple as that.

I can not believe that NO ONE has mentioned the fact that there IS NO MORE XBOX 360's left in the country! Even Microsoft released a press release apologizing that they didn't anticipate such a high demand when Tales of Vesparia was released. Maybe the sales are down because there is a low supply in Japan? Common sense...

The last 2 posts = yes.

Good to see detailed insight instead of the usual half-thoughts people hear and repeat.

Microsoft should have expected TOV to increase demand for 360s. It's sad to see 360 losing momentum again after finally becoming a little bit attractive to Japanese gamers.

Let's hope Japanese retailers will have new boxes in stock, soon.

The only thing that Microsoft needs is good games for japanese players.

This was my first thought exactly. When I read the headline all I could think was, why is this being reported? People cant buy something that isnt there.

Uh... The 360's are sold out in Japan. It's not hard to understand that the sales are not going to be the same as the week before. Now if you want to blame M$ for not being prepared for the situation then that is a different argument.

Or MS took the opportunity to intentionally have a shortage similar to launch... 360s selling out in Japan is pretty impressive.

The only reason they ran out of 360s in Japan is because they didn't allocate very many to that territory in the first place.
