Microsoft: Exclusives 'a little less important'
Posted by XanTium | September 2 00:41 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamerush.zoomshare.com:
[QUOTE]
Boris Schneider-Johne, product manager for Xbox 360 at Microsoft Germany, explained the company's stance on the importance of exclusive titles.

"That is difficult to assess. In the past, in the eighties and nineties, that was a major issue. I remember the big 'Mario vs. Sonic' debates. What we see today is that the influence of exclusive titles on the sales curves becomes ever smaller," Schneider-Johne told Golem.de in an interview.

"In addition, we are in a situation that there is a head-to-head race on several consoles and that nobody is super clear in leadership - especially in matters of the PlayStation 3 against Xbox 360."

I think if you read what he is saying it's actually that third parties exclusives are less important. Having exclusives is important to MS and according to Don Mattrick in a recent interview they are going after more. Something seems to be lost in translation here.

Exclusives are not important in this generation of games, because they are practically non-existent. Third party game developers make their games on both systems, so of course it's a non-issue at this point. How could exclusives be important if there barely any? You can't pick a system because of which one has the best games. Now, since both systems have the same games, you have to choose from other things like hardware differences, online capability, downloadable content, etc.

Personally, I hate this, because I spent money being both systems, only to see that they are pretty much equal in terms of game content. To be honest, if I didn't own 360 and PS3, and I had to decide whether to buy either system or both, I would only buy PS3 now because the few remaining exclusives(at least now) that PS3 has, are games that I've bought PS3 specifically for, it's a silent machine(which is important to me), it has free online play(which I barely use anymore anyway), and I like the interface better.

They do not have the same games, that's what sets them apart and makes this "console war" such a debacle, because of the fact they don't have the same games. That's like saying they have the same hardware. They share some of the same games, but exclusives are what give the systems identities.
