Can Microsoft's Xbox 360 Hold its Second-Place Ranking?

From schaeffersresearch.com: [QUOTE] According to an interview with The Wall Street Journal, a Microsoft exec noted that about 75% of hardware sales take place following a price cut below $200. What's more, GameStop (GME) has boosted its expectations for Xbox 360 sales following the price drop, telling BusinessWeek that it expects sales to jump "anywhere from 1.5 times to 3 times current levels" as a result.
But while MSFT expects to continue to outpace Sony's PS3 sales, Nintendo may already be untouchable. In an interview with BusinessWeek, Don Mattrick, senior vice-president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, said "I'm not at a point where I can say we're going to beat Nintendo." well, I dunno, but you are right, the Wii and the 360 are not in the same category. It's like saying that McDonald's sells more hamburgers than KFC, 2 different customers, and 2 different products. I have a Wii, and yes I do love it, but I play my 360 WAY more than the Wii, mainly because I own 3 games for the Wii, (2 of which came with something else, Wii Sports and Wii Play) But my 360 I have well over 15 games and play alot more.
And as for the price drop...way to go M$ about time someone else gets the break. Plus if you look at the trends for Consoles. noone really ever dominates for more than 2 in a row. Nintendo and SNES, PS1 and PS2, so we will see if Sony can break that trend...I hope not.

LOL, Game Politics are Funny as hell.
FACT: Wii is best selling console
Reaction: "well it's a fad, for kids, no one plays it, Ps3 sucks, Miyamoto is a closet muslim, and doesn't wear a flag pin, Sony supplied bullets to the Japaneese in WWII, blah blah blah, insert spin here (__________)"
FACT: Wii is STILL best selling console
Fanboys, get a grip, just cause your system isn't #1 doesn't mean it's shit. (unless it has 3RROD)

I would be EXTREMELY surprised if Nintendo isn't artificially restricting its supplies to drum up demand. I've been in stores where I finally see 1 on the shelf and think, man should I buy it? It's only 200 or whatever, and there's only 1 left. It makes you feel like you have some hot item that everyone wants.
At least MS is admitting they don't know if they can catch console numbers. Most important thing is how much they make overall. Sure there are more Wii consoles out there, but everyone knows you make more money on software, just like the printer business, who cares how many printers you have, it's about the ink. And like we've seen it covered a million times already, those consoles are going after different gamers. A wii gamer isn't necessarily a 360 gamer, but a PS3 gamer sure as hell is a 360 gamer, so keep beating Sony.

QUOTE(Norco @ Sep 5 2008, 07:01 AM) . A wii gamer isn't necessarily a 360 gamer, but a PS3 gamer sure as hell is a 360 gamer, so keep beating Sony.
If you are saying potentially the majority class of games made for the ps3 fit the 360 then I would agree. However; and I've said this before, until Microsoft gets a hold of hardware quality ( I understand this will be soon) & 360 becomes a better media center, (I understand this will be never) it is unlikely it will enter my household again . Eventually the PS3 will be cheap enough to substitute most computers in my household as I don't game on the PC much these days. The PS3 will get so cheap and is so capable with with spare parts that will be easily available for a decade or better to come; for someone with the small bit of ability it takes to turn the PS3 into a full pc/mediacetner it's crazy not to. That... will turn the tide of hardware sales and as the game library expands, developers become more comfortable, more capable.. I believe all factors will play a role in pushing the PS3 to # 2. I'm not sure the fad that is the Wii can be overcome. It seems to have undying appeal accross the standard and nonstandard demographics game marketing usually aims at; even if it doesn't appeal to me. *edit* Linux familiarity or fear of plays a role I hadn't factored in well enough. Perhaps a distro that works well enough out of the box will be put in place. There are still some fundamental operations under Ubuntu that throw lifetime Windows users for a loop though so... and currently the networking (between PC's Linux or Windows) leaves much to be desired even though it is what could be termed functional when not trying to stream video.
