I have the strangest problem that I can find on any forum.
My 360 when you turn it on does the blink 4 xbox lights, then the fan kicks up to turbo speed, and the xbox shuts off with 2 red lights on the left. This all happen within 10 seconds.

Things I'm done to try to fix it:
thermal paste
X-clamp

I even left it alone overnight, came back, start it up, and same crap high speed fan off in 10 seconds.
what the hell it can't over heat that quick!

It can overheat that fast if the heat sink(s) aren't making good contact with the chip(s).

If you screw them in he-man syle, you might cause more damage then what there already is. But screw the heatsinks down a snug, not tight. Then take them off again and check if there is a thermel paste imprint on the bottom of the heatsink. If there is, then there is contact. wink.gif

Vendeta.

then again... what do I got to lose. biggrin.gif
I did put a thin strip of paste on there... maybe too thin?

just make sure that the heatsinks are making contact with chip. to do this you basically do what vendeta said to do. also you dont need a lot of thermal paste, put on a blob that is about the same size as a grain of rice.

Ye thats just perfect but in your case the thing isnt making any contact at all.
How many washers are you using and how thick is each one of them?

metal washers(1mm thick)
nylon/plastic washers(1mm thick)
spring washers

I have screw, spring washer, motherboard, nylon, washer, and heatsink. (starting from underneath of course)

I guess 3 each screw

Hmm
Wont be the washers then most likely unless your GPU is flexing badly...(previous X-Clamp replacement?)

What about the secondary error code of the overheating by the way?
Did you check if there is an imprint of thermal compound yet?

What have you done with your CPU? maybe that isn't getting good contact.

If both chips are getting good contact and it's still doing the same thing then you probably have a different problem. Maybe the thermostat is fried or shorting, or telling the console it is too hot when it isn't.

Ye then you will have to cut the CPUs temp sensor, this fixed the overheating problem for some other guy but rule out everything else first...

And what the fuck is that bonzo, this scared the shit out of me lol

I actually added more thermal paste to the gpu and cpu. I played for a good 4 hours last night..
Then tonight I had to kick the fans up to 12v or the xbox would lock up and I would get 0102...

any ideas? cut out the back frame of the xbox.... stupid holes...

Hmm try tightening/loosening the screws a bit, there is a cold solder joint somewhere

And 12Volting the fans is never a bad idea so do that as well

just as an update, I cut out the metal mesh and plastic mesh in the back. There must be alot more hot air coming out now, because I only run the fans at 5v. Ran for 4 hours last night, no problems.

Thanks everyone for your input.
