Hi there, I finished my Ambilight Mod the other day and wanted to introduce it to the audience. For those who don't know: Ambilight is a feature, invented by Philips, which controls RGB-LEDs to create an ambient light that matches the average color of the picture on the TV screen. In my case, the XBox drives some RGB-LED strips (I bought DIODERs from IKEA, but any RGB-LEDs will work). So from here I'll leave you with a video and some pictures of "the making" wink.gif

Hello and thanks for your reply.

well, I'm utilizing the RGB-port of my SmartXX V3 modchip to drive the RGB-LEDs. You can't connect them directly to the modchip, as it offers only 200mA, so I used the BUZ72 Mosfets as drivers and some PNPs to convert the open-collector into an "real" output. To control the RGB-Ports output I've written a patch for XBMC which will make it into SVN hopefully after Atlantis release. If you need further information feel free to ask.

Good stuff man, the wires could use a little tidying up but other than that its great. Does the backlight get annoying at all or do you do you stop noticing it after awhile?

thanks everyone.:

costs: my setup: SmartXX V3 (usually 45 EUR, I got mine on sale for 25 EUR, you also can take the LT OPX which is about 25 EUR) you need some RGB-LEDs (IKEA Dioders are 50 EUR, but no name strips might be cheaper), some PNPs and MOSFETs and Resistors (4 EUR). I'd also suggest to buy case (5 EUR) and you need some wires and a Molex-Connector (1 EUR) so this mod costs me about 85 EUR (already had a xbox).

diagram: I used this diagram, which was created by doctormord (creator of worlds first fully rgb enabled xbox tm): diagram

only thing I changed was the supply voltage for the LEDs which are supposed to take 12v (the rest leaving at 5v). Of course you could also buy strips which use 5v and then use this diagram unchanged.

poo87: Yeah, the wires are a mess, actually the whole xbox is a mess due to the lcd and irmod and everything there are too much wires inside. The cutout is also bad, but those things are not my piece of cake, unfortunately dry.gif

I love this backlight and it doesn't annoy me smile.gif I could spent hours just watching the philips "test-video", really like it.
When watching a movie, after a while you don't notice it anymore (probably when you get used to it, you won't notice it anymore from the beginning, but right now, as it is new, I keep concentrating on the wall behind my tv more than on the tv itself biggrin.gif )

That is SO sweet! I got the ikea dioders on the back of my TV aswell and I was wondering if this could be done. Damn, how I'd love to make one of those, but I'm lacking the technical capabilities I think unless someone makes a guide for total newbies or something ^^.

Oh and a question: could this be done with a pc aswell for example? Mostly now I'm starting to use XBMC on the PC since it supports HD material and I was wondering if the same can be done with a PC.

Well I'll certainly look into this a bit more tomorrow. Time to go sleep now ^^.
