Google TechTalk: The Xbox 360 Security System and its Weaknesses
Posted by XanTium | September 6 15:29 EST | News Category: Xbox360

Here's a video of the Google Tech Talks titled "The Xbox 360 Security System and its Weaknesses" by Michael Steil (mist) and Felix Domke (tmbinc):
"After the disaster of the original Xbox, Microsoft put a lot of effort in designing what is probably the most sophisticated consumer hardware security system... "

Does anyone know where I can download this video?
it'd be a pain in the ass to watch a 1-hour video on youtube with such a crappy connection as mine.

Except all they achieved was stopping homebrew.
Piracy of their games is rampant, even on live.

oh and to download youtube videos, try xackobo's method.

Do, Step by Step:
1. Go to: http://www.youtube.com and choose a video. Copy the video URL adress.

2. Go to: http://www.savevid.com and paste Video URL that you had chosen. And click download. And Don't forget: on the saving window You must change video name as "video001.avi". It is important to put ".avi" at the end of video name.

3. Go to: http://www.effectmatrix.com/total-vid... and click to download Video Converter exe. And Install the program.

Or... Try this way. Here the program Download link:
http://rapidshare.com/files/17752857/...

4. Put the converted video into "My YouTube Videos" and delete the other video that you downloaded from savevid.com And now you can start to watch videos with Windows Media Player.

Also you can convert videos to audio files (mp3) just for good quality music clips.

Have Fun !

WTF? Last time I checked, my modded xbox made in 2002 is still kicking ass (played some d00m 3 today actually) while my xbox 360 is sitting below it, broken with the RROD.

My guess is yes the Xbox1 used "off the shelf" parts, but they were parts that have been around and we know work. Where as the 360 has all this custom stuff that hasn't been around that long and still has bugs in it.

wow it must suck with the red rings so far i owned 4 xbox 360's and never had a red ring maybe its just luck but still xbox 1 still kicks ass but i would prefer 360 anyday of course but

as far as security goes it has yet to be cracked for homebrew but give it time as it may be a slow process

so since the kk exploit is somewhat old has any homebrew whatsoever been made for the 360?
it seems to me that there is a perfectly good exploit but no 1 has done anything with it
couldent we make a linux module that allows xex's to boot from a usb drive ?

huh.gif
probably the availability of vulnerable 360's is one thing...

There seem to have been some advances, but a lot of it is discovery and learning. There are hardware hacks already, almost from the beginning, so I feel it will be possible eventually.
------

This session is a lot of good information in one place. I usually love sitting though these talks even if I have heard the information before, but is a pretty long video and its late. I'll have to try the download method though.

Truth is, MS achieved one thing, the average joe can't mod the 360 and this is a proven fact, while before, all you had to do was download a saved game, load it up and bam, have a user friendly screen basically do all the hard work for you.

So yes, maybe it isn't perfect, but I am pretty sure that have achieved their goal in that sense.

They were refering to the security, not the quality of hardware.

Dunno if it was just me, but I found this to be a relatively lame presentation.

It was a very high level overview, didnt really discuss the low level tech info or the how the hackers ever came up with the ideas which spawned the hacks (important topic!).

It spent too long talking about X-box 1 security.

They did not spend enough time discussing the DVD security hacks in any technical detail. Or examine why M$ did not demand a secure DVD drive from their manufacturers as soon as the exploit was discovered. (I still dunno how it could have taken so long to get something that was even slightly secure). They did not discuss the second failure of DVD security, the ability to read DVD box pairing key unencrypted over SATA cable, which enabled all those liteon drives to be swapped out for older ones.

They didn't discuss the idea of using custom microprocessors. One thing that certainly accelerated DVD firmware hacking was that the drives all used "off the shelf" embedded 8051 microcontrollers. The tools (assemblers, compilers, disassemblers) for which all existed and were freely available. Had they used a custom microcontroller with custom instruction set it would have increased complexity no end.

Perhaps it is because I've followed the stories about the hacks relatively closely over the years that I did not find it that interesting?

I liked the section about the HV exploit. That was an interesting section.

Unless I missed it they didn't seem to talk about the Time-Attack method to over-ride the eFuse protection on early X-box 360's until right at the end during the Q&A which I considered to be an important hack.
