Microsoft Confirms New 149 USD Price for 120GB HDD
Posted by XanTium | September 12 00:10 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamedaily.com:
[QUOTE]
When Microsoft cut the prices on its Xbox 360 hardware earlier this month, many wondered if the company would also drop the price on its 120GB hard drive for consumers who want more storage space. Shortly after the price reduction went into effect, a number of retailers began listing the hard drive at the new price of $149 (previously $179).

Now Microsoft has confirmed that this is an official price drop as well. "We reduced the price of the Xbox 360 120 GB Hard Drive to $149 in conjunction with the recent Xbox 360 console price drop. We believe this offers consumers even greater value when selecting accessories that meet their individual gaming and entertainment needs," a spokesperson told GameDaily BIZ.

Even at 150.00 for a drive is still quite a rip off if you ask me. I mean come on I can get a 300-400GB drive from a pc store for that. tongue.gif

120G hard disks are retailing for around $45USD, SATA enclosures these days can be had for anywhere from $20-$100 (and the 360's molded case is nowhere near as good as some of the $30 ones.) So where exactly is the value in the other $75 then? (feel free to bend over for some more of that style of insane "customer incentive/service")

Sad to say, Sony did something great in this respect - not only is the HDD non-optional on all sku's, but it's not signed like the 360's is. Now that is some hardware drm that deserves to be hacked (more than it already is, who wants to give them an excuse to ban a console?) if you ask me.

o...k... Lets re-cap here.

Arcade SKU - $200
120GB Drive - $150
HDMI cable longer and better quality than the Elite's pack-in after a trip (gas) to my local computer parts wholesaler : $15

Total : $365

Elite Console : $400

Debated value: 512MB Memory Card VS Head-set. And can you say "It really doesn't matter if you're black or white ... (cheesy guitar pop riff)".

huh.gif

I do still believe along with everyone else the 120GB drive price is a joke. I think that just illustrates the fact that the Elite and Arcade SKUs should have a price difference of no more than $100.

wow its about time !! That shit was really overpriced and still is !!! grr.gif I have to agree with the previous post, How could a 120 GB HDD cost only 50 dollars less than the Arcade system ? Its just so stupid.

and we are supposed to be happy about this? That is still a hell of a lot of money for a hard drive. 120gigs is nothing and it pretty much dirt cheap. I just saw a 500gig hdd for 54 bucks shipped.

It really doesn't matter if it's a 500gb drive for $54 or a 1tb drive for free, comparisons with regular off the shelf PC components are irrelevent so long as neither work as a direct replacement Xbox 360 Harddrive. Microsoft found a way to lock in a profit on a peripheral, Boo Hoo at them for knowing how. tongue.gif You're only upset because you're on the losing end.

Think of it this way...Do you think Ferrari or Porsche will ever lower the cost of their cars if you whine and say Toyota sells cars for cheaper? Because, by your same logic all cars with four tires, pedals, and a steering wheel should be priced the same. Aren't you unhappy about that too?

That's not really a good comparison, the cost of parts between a Ferrari and a Toyota are vastly different. You are basically comparing apples and oranges. On rhe other hand, an Xbox 360 120gb hdd is simply a cheap, software locked 2.5" hdd with a custom shell surrounding it.

Still a bargain compared to what PS2 memory cards used to cost.

On the left foot (we ran out of hands) 16.9 ozs of bottle water runs about $1.29. Out of the faucet it runs about 1/4 of a cent. Every knows it's over priced but it's their choice. You gotta pay to play.

But you can still drink tap water. I can still drive that Toyota. I can buy cheaper 3rd party parts for that Ferrari. My 360 can't use that off the shelf HDD. Isn't that one of them monopolistic actions.
