Xbox spending 'tens of millions' on Xmas
Posted by XanTium | September 19 22:28 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From mcvuk.com:
[QUOTE]
Senior regional director of Microsoft UK Neil Thompson has told MCV that the recent price cuts are the opening gambit in a peak season which will see "tens of millions" spent on marketing the Xbox brand.
"We've been talking to all of our retail partners about what we're doing at Christmas and we've been very bold and ambitious about how successful we think we can be.
"On marketing we'll spend tens of millions - we're going to engage in a very bold promotional push from now until Christmas."

Thompson also ruled out shortages of the console as sales begin to climb - stating that there will be plenty to go around:
"I have been very bullish on supply for the UK market," he added.

It's got the price point that matches families' budgets better.

i disagree with both of you.

the "fun" factor on the wii is non-existent. the reason why the wii sells is because americans believe the following:
1) it'll help them lose weight. maybe a game will motivate them to get up and move around because they can't motivate theirself.
2) it's better for my kids, there isn't a bunch of killing, it inspires my kids to actually move and not just sit on the couch.

the price point, well, the 360 is the lowest priced current gen console at 199.

any questions?

that would be a personal opinion, NOT FACT.

FACT is that the Wii is still selling like hotcakes, and 360 started to slow down. Now M$ needs to spend money to keep from losing their #2 spot, not to mention "borrowing" a few ideas from their competitors

I have how many Americans did you survey to come up with that rubbish?
Do you think the only place the Wii sells is America?
Wii has plenty of fun factor. a novelty it may be but the fact is kids love them.
Perhaps the parents of the fat kids you surveyed should have educated their offspring more about healthy eating and correct exercise, because if they truly believe the Wii will do the repair job on overweight kids they are mistaken.

He didnt say anything about fat kids, you read both his points and somehow combined them into one. I think the Wii sells because it is basically more of a toy as it is a console and also it has a lot more games then any other console that targets the younger audience whereas PS3 and the superior 360 both primarily target the older audience.

I even Feel Like Buying myself a Wii Console for Christmas, The Way They Advertise and The stuff You can do and get with the Wii Definetly Sells into peoples minds better then the 360 and ps3 consoles.
Of Course The Price Of the 360 Will Now give people more of a choice in deciding which console to buy

That's funny, when I worked retail I sold countless game consoles and NEVER had one parent tell me they were getting the Wii because it will get someone off of their fat ass... HOWEVER, lots of people told me they were buying it cuz everyone else was getting one. Fad, In thing, whatever you want to call it... you get on the news everywhere and say Yellow shoe strings are selling like crazy and stores cannot keep them in stock and people will flock to shoe stores. I don't know how many people bought them in belief that they better 'get one while they can.' This year the economy is MUCH WORSE condition than it was last year. Spending was on the conservative side last year, but chances are it will be worse this year. Unless Nintendo joins the price matching game, the Xbox can do awfully well. Consider the price of both as they originally released... now consider the new price points.

I'm just curious, how long does everyone here believe the Wii can keep this up? Do you think Wii will still be the same 10 years from now or that thing everyone was buying 10 years ago cuz everyone had one? Do you think Nintendo's next console will be the same? I don't believe they could possibly release the same system 5 years from now and expect it to do just as well.

Are you for real. Of course it's obvious, it's the thin and anorexic kids that need to lose weight. It was obviously the skinny ones he was meaning in point one.
Read the post and try use some common sense to see the actual reality.
Nobody buys anything to make skinny kids lose weight

I was gonna say "let's not turn this in a nintendo Wii comparison flamefest" but it seems I'm too late.

it makes perfect sense for Microsoft to make sure they have enough units available for the holidays, developers like to release new games in that period and microsoft wants to make sure they have enough units ready to go with them for new players.

as for the weight loss thing: sure getting out of the couch and interacting more than with just your hands (and perhaps feet if racing wheel) does something, but to actually lose weight with visible results, you need to do far more.
then there's also the select amount of people with glanular problems or diabetes, and the fact not everybody loses weight easily.
thinking a console will solve all your problems is a wrong mentality though, no pain, no gain(no pun intended, in this case it's loss of course)
