MS to offer NXE 'storage solutions' to those in need
Posted by XanTium | October 10 21:59 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From xbox360fanboy.com:
[QUOTE]
After learning that the New Xbox Experience and Avatar customization would require, at minimum, a 256MB memory card, it spawned more questions than answers. Would the NXE install take up all 256MB? If so, what about Xbox 360 Arcade owners and their tiny 256MB memory card? Wait, what about Core customers who don't have storage or own a 64MB memory card? What are they to do and is the NXE update a mandatory download? CONFUSION! So, we reached out to. Major Nelson and, thankfully, he cleared up said confusion ...

"The new Xbox experience will require 128MB of free space. A hard drive is recommended for the optimal experience, to take advantage of some new features, and to be able to enjoy the great movies, TV shows and games available on Xbox LIVE. While we expect the majority of consumers to download the New Xbox Experience without a problem, a small percentage of Xbox 360 owners do not have enough memory to accommodate the update. To help ensure all Xbox LIVE members are able to download the New Xbox Experience and enjoy its new features, Microsoft will be offering storage solutions to the Xbox LIVE community. We are not sharing details of this offering yet. Be sure to check xbox.com for more details in the coming weeks."

i am definitely curious about this "storage solution" for the XBL community as they will certainly not do anything to reduce the demand for their overly-expensive memory cards so more than likely that rules out USB devices unless they are severely crippled in relation to space.

online storage would not be reliable for obvious purposes unless this storage solution was merely temporary for install purposes and not for regular enjoyment...hmmmm...makes me wonder...

I would like if they decrease the 20gb price. And introduce a standalone 60gb at the old 20gb price for people who don't need 120gb but want more then 20gb.

This is a completely bizarre situation. Microsoft has gone out of their way for the past 3 years to defend the existence of the core and arcade models, and they just now suddenly realized that the new mandatory dash upgrade won't work without external storage?

Even if you ignore the core model and all the people stuck with 64mb cards entirely, even the new arcade model will become nerfed if the included memory card is suddenly locked to the console. What will happen to an arcade if you remove the memory card after the upgrade? What will happen if you swap the memory card, or if you lose it or it breaks? Will your console suddenly become useless?

I have never been a fan of the core or arcade model to begin with, but this definitely seems to be something that will cause serious problems for Microsoft if they make this dash upgrade mandatory, which is what they have always claimed.

Just bizarre.

na i not worried about that m$ had to brainstorm that idea to make sure it wont happen worst case it will ptobly revert the dash to the original one we have now

im really curious about this storage solution but we will have to wait to find out thats why i got a 120gb hard drive so i know im partially ready for this update except about this new dash making some bans

Is anybody really surprised here? Ever since I first saw that new bloatware turd of a dashboard I've been asking about how much space that POS is going to take up.

And some people think the dash is slow now... jester.gif

or they could allow us to use our own external usb storage within reason, like limit the max size to a gig or 2 so it wouldnt really affect the hdd sales

The fact is, those models sell and at no extra cost to MS. Its all about the economics of the device. Having a lower priced model open the market up to people who do not want/have to spend the extra dough for a HDD.

While the points you bring up are definitly valid, and things MS should (have) considered before this dashboard upgrade was made public, I bet it only effects a small percentage of people. And while it may not be right to sort of leave them behind, the truth is they probably do not even play that much. Or even play online, because they have not bought live gold. So in realality this update will be invisible to them.

What I dont know is that the servers went down for over a day, and the possibility is there that they may go down again. I paid for a service, and they limited my time on said service.

I welcome the update though. Netflix and the ability to play the games off the HDD are definitly good features. Avatar though? Really? That thing seems a little kiddie Wii-ish. Unless my guy can get a bazooka!
