Im running xbmc in 720P mode... typical movies and tv shows run great... if I get a video that is advertised as being 720P it laaaags to the point of being unwatchable

am I missing something

yes.

You are missing that the xbox is old hardware. 720p does not run "perfectly" on xbox. 720p Xvid might be close to perfect, but it is likely that the videos that are unwatchable are h.264.

h.264 is a modern MPEG4 codec, which unfortunatelly is very CPU intensive.

Xbox poor 733MHz Pentium is simply overpowered by this codec.
