Real-time audio censoring coming to Xbox LIVE?
Posted by XanTium | October 20 17:38 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From examiner.com:
[QUOTE]
The gaming community as a whole is generally a decent group of people, when face to face. Mix a competitive online gaming session with the anonymity the Internet provides and those decent people turn into a mob of racist, swearing, a-holes. A new patent awarded to Microsoft may change this.

Microsoft's patent is for technology that would allow real-time censoring of foul language. Sure we all think that potty mouthed 12 year olds are funny but it seems some parents don't. With MS trying to push the XBOX 360 into the casual market it only makes sense that they would try to clean up the service that they want grandma and little Timmy to use.

Nice idea (assuming you get the option to turn it off, of course) in theory, but I can't see it working in practice. Voices vary too much, there's no way they can censor everything. Either something will get through, people will find a way to get by it (by disguising their voice somehow), or it's going to falsely censor something legitimate. Or all of the above.

Cant see it happening, And to be honest I hope not. I swear alot, but not to directly abuse people unlike some of the arseholes online.

I better be able to turn it off or I am going to be pissed. Now a filter that will filter annoying high pitched voices I would use. Kiddie blocker?

I guess people with crappy mics that cant even get past the voice recognition on the end war demo have nothing to worry about then.

This isn't going to stop you from individually swearing, it just means the other people don't have to listen to it.

We all swear when need be, but I personally never thought much about people who think a sign of maturity is to constantly swear every other word in a conversation. At that point I just mute them entirely.

You're making assumptions without even seeing the product. This is new technology who's development has progressed enough to get an actual patent. This probable works better then you are assuming.

Plus, For Xbox live chat it wouldn't really need to be perfectly accurate nor will alot of people actually waste their time disquising their voices just so they can get other people to hear them swearing. Seriously, are you actually going to go though all the effort of disquising your voice in the middle of a game, just so you can know that other's heard you swearing? (What a wasted effort that would be)

Uhmm.. frankly I think you're all missing a much more important point here....

In the the terms of swearing and other BS, I for one think that if those stupid parents don-t want their stupid little kids to hear it, they shouldn't let them play online period, and not break our balls with that... (besides the obvious that they're gonna hear it elsewhere anyway -tv, movies, the street, school, their own stupid parents, etc..).

But also, think about this "briliant techonology" that has to receive the data, and analyze it before sending it out... how much delay is that gonna introduce?

Nice going Micro$oft, give us more lag even on your crappy system....

"progressed enough to get an actual patent" ?? Who ever told you that something has to "progress" or be a wonder to get a patent?? you can patent practically anything provided someone else hasn't done so already or is trivial...

i dont like this idea at all. i hate that the whole fucking world has to be about kids !! We are the adults and we rule the damn world ! Lets all live in a bubble because everything needs to be nice and clean for kids !! I dont have kids and if i did i would protect them myself and not have to worry about big brother doing it for me. FU stupid parents !!

this idea won't end well.
especially if they implement it globally without shutoff.

personally, if I were them I'd use that technology for something useful like a voice command controlled dashboard feature. But then again, Mircrosoft doesn't seem to be very innovative anymore.
