Unique NXE Avatar URLs discovered
Posted by XanTium | October 21 14:36 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From xbox360fanboy.com:
[QUOTE]
An anonymous tipster has informed Xbox 360 Fanboy that Avatars -- the cute, customizable user characters that will launch with the New Xbox Experience -- will each have their own unique URL (which won't open in Firefox or Safari, by the way). The URLs in question lead to PNG files of a users Avatar. There is a full body image along with two smaller images of user created Avatar Gamerpics. All of them are stored at the site avatar.xboxlive.com, which currently leads to a blank page. Will these images be part of a broader social networking platform?

This is pretty interesting, although it doesn't surprise me.
I'm guessing that NXE wants to give people the option to share their avatars much like those xbox live badges.

Does anyone know why IE displays the page 'correctly', whereas firefox/safari loads the .png data as ascii? It's bugging me a little...

I imagine that the header sent from the file are incorrect, that's why Firefox can't display the picture.

Thanks eduardor.

Also, just to join the "I tried this" parade...
"notwen" has an avatar too.

I thought that Newton died a rumour-driven death?

Looks like the last-modified header is invalid. If you run linux you can wget it. I'm sure there are other ways too but that just what I tried first.

I've attached the pic here http://imagebin.org/29226

CODE

Resolving avatar.xboxlive.com... 68.142.93.39, 68.142.93.41

Saving to: `avatar-body.png.1'

2008-10-21 16:50:33 (116 KB/s) - `avatar-body.png.1' saved [31928/31928]

:EDIT:

Major's is actually http://avatar.xboxlive.com/avatar/major%20...avatar-body.png

i'm sure everyone on the xbox team has an avatar. just remember if there's a space in the gamertag it's %20.

Those png's may also contain all of the avatar information apart from the images. Just like Spore does with the png's of the things that you create.

It would be interesting to look at all the png fields.

This is because the image (.png) is server with the mimetype text/html. HTTP server response:
CODE
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Thu, 23 Oct 2008 15:19:25 GMT
Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0
Cache-Control: max-age=10, must-revalidate

Content-Type: text/html
Content-Length: 31928

lol. probably a tie in to the drowned Zune social network.

If you think about it that way, the possibilities are pretty endless. But if nobody is seeing it as I do then I will continue typing:

so there was xbox live and msn instant messenger. then ms started changing everything to "live" , and now its Windows Live messenger and Xbox Live, which makes perfect sense. So that sort of consolidation of Live wouldn't make it too farfetched to see their Zune be part of the infrastructure.

In that case, start with these avatars and some sort of social network, tie that into the Zune's Social network, surprise update to the zune to include the avatars. Next-gen zune has one of those pico-projectors that have been put in phones as of late, everyone projects their avatars on the wall and a whole host of other gimmicky features.

anyway, you heard it here first.
