NXE - What You Want to Know: Netflix and Video Store
Posted by XanTium | October 24 14:26 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From the Xbox PR Blog:
[QUOTE]
We've all been there. You've just popped some popcorn, put on your flannel pants with the puppies on them (don't fake like you don't have them), wrapped yourself in a comfy blanket, and parked yourself on the couch. Remote in hand, and Dolby 7.1 ready to blast, you reach for the familiar red Netflix envelope sitting on the coffee table - only to discover that it's already open, and you've already watched the DVD! Your girlfriend/boyfriend/wife/husband/roommate/dog forgot to put it in the mail. Frustration sets in.

Relax - it's time to get comfy again and turn on your Xbox 360. On Nov. 19, all movies from your Netflix instant watch queue will be instantly accessible and playable on your Xbox 360. All Xbox LIVE Gold members with a Netflix subscription will be able to instantly watch more than 12,000 movies from the Netflix library at no extra charge.

On top of that, you no longer need to put on make-up, "acceptable" clothing and shoes to drive to the rental store. Xbox LIVE Video Marketplace offers more than 20,000 pieces of HD and standard definition content, and will have a new sleek look and feel that makes you feel like you're browsing shelves right in your own living room. You'll be able to see hi-res box art for all the movies and TV shows you love, plus read all the information that would usually be on the back of the DVD box.

In total, when the New Xbox Experience launches, you will have a massive library of more than 30,000 HD and standard movies and TV episodes at your fingertips. This gives me another reason to spend a quiet night in with Clive Owen, Cillian Murphy, Christian Bale, oh the list goes on...

Meh no Netflix here and Video Store has not met my expectations yet (no TV shows wtf even Itunes has that blink.gif!). I'm just still grabbing cheap HD-DVD's while I can, they cost next to nothing, I can find most for almost £3-£5 it's great. Sure it's a dead format, but they still work and my player is USB to biggrin.gif.

That's brilliant! How much does a player set you back these days?

Aw, I never used to care about video rentals over XBL/Netflix...but once I saw the choice....
Why does the UK always get the dregs of a brilliant service? Why!?

Well my player was £109 but I got 5 free movies with it when it was going. I think players go for £30 now.

Here is my HD collection so far, really why should I buy Blu-Ray if I can get them cheap. And remember I can hook up my player to my PC.

I'm absolutely loving my Heroes atm got it for £17.50 when it used to retail for £70!

I just need Planet Earth now and a few other movies I want that have been remastered and ill be happy and get any more I want.

Is Netflix going to stream from PC or come straight over live? I haveVista Ultimate 64 and I amon my 4th 360 d/t RROD. MCE will no longer install it gives me the numbers I enter them on the PC and I get a generalized error code I have spent days literally trying to get it to work and hours on the phone with C.S. and it doesn't.

So my real question is. Is this service going to actually work and be of quality through live? Or is it going to be streaming degraded resolution limited number of channels of sound?

I'm sure that they will have all of the bugs worked out of it, of at least most of them before they launch it. They will have a lot of pissed of people if they don't what with all of the hype they have made up about it. but you never know really, with microsoft, some say we will be lucky if the udate doesn't brick our consoles

Bucko, I'm the same boat as you. Netflix isn't available in Canada but cheap HD-DVDs are smile.gif

MCE is a pain in the ass to install with my 64bit Vista laptop. It sees the 360 but won't install it properly.

XBMC on the original Xbox is easier to setup than MCE!

You're exagerating. MCE is easy to configure if you know what your doing. MCE is already included and installed if you're running Vista Ultimate or Home premium. It's not something you need to install separatley, it's just there as part of the default OS install. Linking it to a 360 is just a matter of getting them on the same network and following onscreen instructions.

MCE works fine on my 64Bit Vista Home Premium with my 360. I don't use it though much.

Well, considering the Xbox 360 drive doesn't have the capabilities to play uncompressed audio... that might be one reason to go to bluray biggrin.gif

On another audio note, I noticed they mentioned 5.1 sound - will the streaming movies actually have Dolby Digital audio or are they still just stereo? I was under the impression that streaming on the computer for Netflix only came with stereo audio....

Really sucks its only for GOLD members. I wouldn't think it has anything to do with MS, they are just providing the interface.

what does 7.1 audio have to do with netflix on live at all?!?! this will in no way replace a bluray title =)
alot of the movies on the netflix stream list are also "older". dont think you are going to get new releases right off the bat. that would compete way to much with the market place downloads.

Its not going to stream from your pc. And odds are its compressed to hell and back.
