HDCP Required For Xbox 360 HD Netflix Streaming
Posted by XanTium | October 30 11:51 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From formatwarcentral.com:
[QUOTE]
The copy protection police have struck again. The new HD Netflix streaming service on the Xbox 360 requires an HDCP compatible display device. If you try play a movie while not connected to an HDCP compatible display, you will get the "Secure HDCP Link Not Found" error.

For all the people that have a non-HDCP LCD monitors hooked up via DVI to their Xbox 360, you are SOL. What is not clear is whether your resolution be limited to 480p if you have an older Xbox 360 with only component outputs.

They're saying you have to use an HDMI cable? My xbox runs 1080p through component cables. I take it I'm SOL as well?

Yep, you need to carry HDCP which only happens on HDMI or DVI (but must state on the display that it's HDCP compliant).

It looks like you don't need HDCP, Engadget plays an HD video from Netflix and it had no problem over Component.

This is a bunch of shit dreamed up by the competition. Since 1/2 the Xboxs don't include hdmi microsoft would never do that. The only part you are screwed on so far is if your using a hdmi to dvi converter and your tv does not work with HDCP over dvi. So maybe 10% it won't work correctly.

This is the same rules as Bluray, right? Component works (pending ICT) and HDMI works but not unencrypted DVI.

It's still outrageous, it's just not anything new.

For those of you who don't understand HDCP, it only affects digital connections. You cannot watch encrypted digital video without an HDCP compliant display. That goes for PCs as well, but it also includes your video card being compliant. If you use anything non-digital... say component... then it will not affect you at all. BTW, I'm not entirely certain the netflix videos even come in HD for those of you asking about if it'll only be 480p.

Ah - ok.

Basically if you want to use a digital connection it needs to be HDCP compliant. Analog connections such VGA and component don't care smile.gif

5 Years ago purchased 50' LCD projection hitachi with DVI cable Model 50 V 500a(Amazingly survived a fire). Unsure if its HDCP compatable or not. Then to ensure 3 HDMI connections purchased a Sony STR DG720 tuner (I know its low range). Run HDMI to DVI from receiver to TV. I just ensure any content via HDMI outputs PCM sound and voila everything has been kosher for me.

Now if I could just get the stupid streaming from my Vista Ult. 64 to my 360 working I would order netflix. Worked fine for my 1st three decks now nothing.

yeah, thanks a lot for the gayness netflix/MS.

so not only is my 360 not compatible, but neither is my TV... I was really looking forward to this service, but looks like I will be waiting indefinitely.

hmmm... maybe my TV does support it, "MonitorLinkT/DVI Input Secure HDCP digital connection that enables auto-configuration", 3 year old rear projection mits..

Maybe time to upgrade my 360 then if that's all it takes because I really want this service =D
