Debunk: Xbox 360 streams HD Netflix over component just fine
Posted by XanTium | October 30 15:38 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From engadget.com:
[QUOTE]
There's some hysterical outrage out there right now over the New Xbox Experience's HD Netflix HDCP restrictions -- apparently it only works with HDCP-compliant digital displays, which is prompting a lot of hand-wringing about copyright restrictions and whether older 360s will get "locked out." Well, we're here to make it all better -- that's our NXE-equipped 360 connected over component, happily playing back HD Netflix at 1080i.
The problem is that some older LCD monitors don't support HDCP over DVI, so if you're in the minority of people using an HDMI to DVI adapter to drive an older display that doesn't do HDCP, HD Netflix won't work, since it can't authenticate.

Yes. Among the minority with a 2004 Toshiba 57" Rear projection. My DVI to HDMI adapter works great for games and streaming xvid avis, but give it a regular dvd or a hddvd and it pukes.

HDCP sucks.

Hope it does indeed work alright through component....

Do Netflix streamed movies have 5.1 surround or is it all 2 channel stereo stuff?

It should, since this is how HDCP works for everything.

I'm pretty sure HDCP only applies to HDMI and DVI, since component and VGA are analog. HDCP means High-bandwidth Digital Copy Protection, so by definition, it only applies to a digital signal.

that is possibly how they have managed to get this one to fly without being shot down (M$ must have batered hard here, or the film companies realised they had to give in or ruin their potential market and there for proffit), however I believe the Blu Ray spec and HD-dvd specs said that if the flag was in the stream for hdcp any analog display MUST be downscaled to 540p or 480p (I cant remember which), I am sure the movie companies could force this onto other HD media outlets if they decide its worth it.

Yeah but they couldn't tell PC owners they had to convert to HDMI etc so that they could enforce HDCP over it. So there was an exception put in for VGA, which is why the 360 can play upscaled DVDs as well as HD-DVD at glorious 1080p resolution. Side note on this, I can't find any information out there on a VGA to HDMI converter.
Found this but I don't know where it pulls it's signal from to output the HDMI:
