Why Sony sells music videos on Xbox 360, not PS3
Posted by XanTium | 4-11-2008 0:39 EST

From ps3fanboy.com:
[QUOTE]
One of the most ridiculous examples, presented by The Associated Press, is about Sony's music division, Sony BMG. The Sony BMG label is the second largest in the world, including artists from AC/DC to Will Smith. However, why is it that music videos from Sony BMG are available on Xbox 360 and not PS3? Because Sony BMG demanded it. Bertelsmann, the "BMG" part of the Sony BMG partnership, insisted that music videos are available on Xbox 360 instead of PS3 "to make sure it's a fair deal" for Bertelsmann, said a Sony executive. We're not sure how many heads have been face-palmed by that kind of ideology.

Thankfully, things will start changing, now that Sony has bought full control over the music division. Sony BMG will now be called Sony Music Entertainment. With more and more of Sony's media empire coming under one house, we're hoping it won't be too long before some not-so-stupid decisions are made at Sony HQ.

What's there to debate? It would obviously be most beneficial to them and consumers to have it available on both platforms.

Let me give you the real answer to that question.

It was all about money. Microsoft paid for it, making it more profitable than if it was just Sony doing it. The End.

That's certainly possible, but as I said "just Sony" is not the only alternative. Having something like this exclusive is a nice bullet point, but I don't think Microsoft would pay enough to make exclusivity a good deal since this does not seem like something that would drive sales of either console. Buying music videos? C'mon.

I never said they paid for exclusivity. I said they simply paid. That by itself means its worth it to let them sell the videos on their site. PS3 on the other hand they would have to invest for people to program and then prepare the videos. All of which is much harder than having someone else pay you for the rights and then you just turn over the media to them.

That's true, you didn't say that. It just seemed to me to be implied as I thought the question you were attempting to answer was why they "are available on Xbox 360 and not PS3"; perhaps I put too much emphasis on the latter part. To further that implication, the only alternative you proposed was also exclusivity. Finally, Microsoft just paying them doesn't sufficiently address what's said in the article, not to mention that's incredibly obvious.

The rest of your response doesn't make much sense either. PS3 already has a video store that does what would be needed. Adding another section/category would be programmatically trivial, and the process of getting, preparing, adding, etc. videos should be the same.

I'm sure there is more to it than we both know. What I was attempting to say is without the additional funds, perhaps they determined it wasn't financially viable to do. Maybe there are legal fees, or royalties or something else that needs to be paid in order to do it.
