MS: Half of NXE plans were 'cut out'
Posted by XanTium | November 4 13:17 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From computerandvideogames.com:
[QUOTE]
Speaking in a recent interview Microsoft's Jerry Johnson said that the redesigned Xbox 360 dash isn't finished yet and detailed plans to bolster the backend with new applications and content.

"There's still a lot of stuff we want to do," Johnson told CVG in an interview. "Half the things we wanted to do [in NXE] we cut out of the service.

"One of the nice things we did was this architectural change to make things more published and driven from the service. All of a sudden we opened up the platform to say 'I don't have to wait until once or twice a year to release something onto the dashboard'.

They'll probably make these extra features available to buy as apps on the Marketplace.

For anyone who downloaded the NXE Leaked, notice how empty everything seems untill we connect to live, couldn't they just add new things to the "rss" or whatever drives the info on the channels, so a new "primetime" game comes out, it will show up, you go to it, download the app and start playing.

Probably won't have to go to the marketplace to download new channels, they could just appear in there which you could download and play if it interested you.

That's not too different to how the NXE operates already. I signed into one of my US accounts the other day and in the first channel I saw ("spotlight" I think it was) there's a window showing you photo party. I selected it and it installed the app right there and then. Netflix seems to operate in a similar way, you select it and it downloads the app. I reckon it's only a matter of time before they start adding apps you need to pay for. Like a web browser, email, Live vision camera app or something along those lines.

I never did understand, why does everyone want a webbrowser? Most people have a computer with a high speed connection in the same room as their 360.

No, a lot of people have the 360 in their loungeroom hooked up to a big arse HDTV and their computer in another room altogether, especially people with families. It would be nice to be able to do casual browsing in the loungeroom without having to go to your PC, do some gaming, quickly check your mail, back to gaming, grab some news headlines, back to gaming...

cause it's convenient.
windows or linux PC boot time: >30 seconds unless you're filthy rich and can afford SSD's and such hyperdrives that are actually bars of RAM on a battery.
360 console boot time: <10 seconds.
it's more convenient and most people have a HD-capable TV these days that offer a resulution suitable for web browsing.

and the PS3 has a web browser, so why couldn't the 360? MS does make IE, with IE7 being quite mature and secure compared to number 6.
shouldn't be to hard for MS to implement a browser built on the IE7 core, with security measures to make it sandboxed implemented.

and I don't know about you, but I don't like to have a noisy computer in the living room, most living rooms don't have a decent place to put them.
I'm even kind of surprised there have been no XNA game studio attempts at this yet.

Yes tongue.gif, well kind of (this one is off my spare account). There's a pretty big selection of pre-made avatars for you to choose from and tweak. The biggest problem I found when creating my own was having it not end up looking like a lesbian (I'm a guy with long hair). And all the male avatars seem to be somewhat ermm.. effeminate shall we say.

erm.....well, stop being a pirating b*stard then... would spring to mind.

Frikkin retards who think that it is their god given rights to screw with a companies hardware and not be penalised. That gets my bloody goat that does. They piss and moan about companies trying to protect their IP whilst the whole time all they want to do is friggin play pirate software.

Oh yes, they may shout about choice for the consumer but we all know that the ultimate goal is to bypass protection schemes so that the pirate software industry can flourish.

You know its true, all of you. You could give a flying f*ck about innovation, all you want is free games. What a bunch of hypocritical aholes.

Be happy Microsoft is so lenient. I would ban your account and blacklist all of your financial details and addresses so that you would never again be able to access live.
