Not to be an eternal cynic, but if your Zephyr goes bad you'll be very fortunate to get the RROD.
Mine has the no-video/HANA failure and MS only honors one year on "general hardwrae failure".
It gonna be pay MS to fix it or heat gunning for me.....
I've noticed the same thing. As well as an increase in general failures on Xenon units as well. I've noticed red ring errors becoming much more uncommon over the past year or so, but other issues becoming much more common. Symptoms that yielded the RRoD before are now resulting in either no video, an error code, or something else. Now call me a conspiracy theorist, but I have a feeling that the system updates over the past year or so have changed the way the system reports its errors. I think the updates have made it so situations that sued to cause the system to RRoD are now being treated differently and reported in a different manner. As a result, these errors are no longer covered by Microsoft's extended warranty policy, therefore saving them a considerable sum of money.
Yes, it's all speculation and yes, it's a bit out there, but can anyone say they'd honestly be surprised if this were the case? It's all impossible to prove, is within Microsoft's capabilities, and is also a financially beneficial move on their behalf. As I'm sure many of you who have gone through the repair process can attest to, true customer satisfaction does not seem to be a major concern for Microsoft - certainly not as much as media and public perception of the company is.
