Sony 'Way Ahead' on Environmental Issues
Posted by XanTium | November 27 00:54 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From edge-online.com:
[QUOTE]
Greenpeace International has told Edge that Sony is a significantly greener videogame company than both Microsoft and Nintendo. And while Microsoft is improving its standards, Nintendo is performing woefully.

Sony: 24/45
Microsoft: 15/45
Nintendo: 4/45

And though Microsoft's score suggests they are not too far from Sony in the broadest sense, the company's score of fifteen points were largely tallied in three areas; precautionary principles, chemicals management and a timeline for phasing out potentially dangerous chemicals. Microsoft scored nine points in these three areas and failed to impress Greenpeace in a number of other areas, yet Sony accumulated its higher total by a focused effort across the spectrum of green measures.

"Microsoft is just getting on board with the environment. They've just hired a sustainability team, and we are seeing movement from Microsoft with its 360 console, but the company had started from a very low base."

Kruszewska does praise Microsoft for making its changes, however, especially in its promise to eliminate PVC BFRs [brominated flame retardants - known for their toxic properties, resistance to degradation in the environment and an ability to 'build' inside humans and animals] by the end of 2010. "But really, they have it so easy because they only make two core hardware products - the 360 and the Zune - they should really be way ahead. But they are coming on board for sure."

I don't know if this is the response they intended, but I really enjoyed the gory parts. It also made me realize that tofu is for pussies.

who still takes Greenpeace seriously when they come with figures?
they seem to forget their own zodiacs and boats drink a lot of gallons per mile and are highly polluting.

Do they not know that lead free solder has probably caused most 360 ROD's. With some mobos being rendered useless what do they do with them?? My guess is throw them away, yer that is really green.

Who cares what Greenpeace say there just like health and safety they keep saying you have to do this or that but never come up with any real answers that are practical.

indeed, when was the last time an environmentalist came with an economically sustainable solution that doesn't require us to go live like in the dark ages?

*yawn* even in a time where going green is the big thing, Greenpeace STILL vies for sensationalistic crap to remain even slightly relevant. Oh boo-hoo no one reports their environmental statistics? and for the love of god? they are some of the up on high in Mt. Olympus geniuses that helped kill lead solder. Which is extremely stupid. Lead solder is gone! Yet now we have electronics that fail allot faster due to the solder not holding up well to years of heat effectively cutting lifespan of electronics that get hot at all in half that I own. Bravo!!!

Not that I care about this bullshit, but you would think that they would at least include power consumption of a console as a factor for environmental greenness? The Xbox and PS3 consume a lot of power, whereas the Wii is very energy efficient, so it should get some "bonus" points for that...

ditto, it's far less good and the only advantage it brought is the guy with astma in my last year of high school doesn't faint during electronics classes due to lead solder fumes anymore.
less conductivity: less energy efficiënt, shorter lifespan, ergo: more polluting electronics get bought and more energy gets lost on inefficient components, conclusion: lead free solder ultimately is worse for the birds 'n bees.
