Microsoft confirms 256MB internal storage in Xbox 360 Arcade units
Posted by XanTium | December 2 18:46 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From xbox360fanboy.com:
[QUOTE]
As if all the images and videos weren't enough evidence, we've now received official confirmation from Microsoft that new Xbox 360 Arcade units do come with 256MB of internal storage. Speaking with us, a Microsoft spokesperson said quite simply, "We are constantly updating the console's more than 1700 internal components. We can confirm that we are moving to internal memory for the Xbox 360 Arcade. The physical internal memory is the same size as the previous external memory units - 256MB."

I notice they don't comment on Elite and Pro models but surely they'll be the same since it's more cost effective for them to manufacture only one type of mobo.

Maybe I speak alone here but I honestly perfer the memory unit to be external.

I like to be able to move my gamer profile and gold account around to any Xbox I choose, including my own 3 360's as well as any friends that I visit - and a 256MB memory card/unit is perfect for that!

It's way better than recovering your profile all the time!

I'm honestly suprised that memory cards havent caught on for this purpose but I am sure for most people the price of a retail memory card isnt worth it.

I loved the arcade 360 (with memory card) plus refurbished 20GB HD deal from Microsoft for $230

Oh well....I guess Microsoft want to make more $$$$$ off each arcade. dry.gif

HDD being external isn't so great in my book, but internal MU sized memory is pretty bad. The great thing about the arcade for me was the MU. I could shove my profile on the thing and take it round mates whenever i'm gaming

Not to mention that you can keep your saved data when the console red-lights on you and has to be sent back.

1700 components?

It is testament to MS's lack of hardware prowess that the mainboard is still much the same at this late point in its life-cycle, there has been very little consolidation to make the thing less complex and cheaper to manufacture.

Wonder if that offer is still good with arcades so you can get the $20 20gb or the free mem card.

I have an early Falcon Arcade and it wouldn't let me get a HDD.
Sucks.

Is it 100% sure that the new Jasper Arcade only comes with internal memory only?

For me it would make sense to have the internal memory for updates only and still a memory stick in the bundle like with the HD-DVD drive which also had internal memory.

why are so many of you whining that a memory unit allows you to travel around.
then just use a darn MU instead of the onboard flash, it's not like they are forcing you to use the onboard flash.
you can travel around with the HDD too you know, it's not like they're taking something away from you.

MS changes something and everybody's bitching.
Apple changes something and people call it innovative, no matter if it's a good or bad change.

I believe the people are talking about the fact that MS had bundled a MU in with their arcade units before as opposed to now not having an MU with the new Arcade Units that have the onboard memory....

Unless the new arcade units also come bundled in with a MU, which in that case would invalidate my claim. smile.gif

Because now you have to buy a separate memory unit at Microsoft's over inflated prices where as before it came included with the console. Storing profiles on a hard drive isn't the same as storing them on a memory card. You usually have to connect to live and recover the gamertag if you want to sign into a profile stored on a HDD (this is when you use the HDD on a console other than your own). That can take a long time if the profile is tied to a lot of DLC (almost half an hour with my main account). With a memory card you don't have this issue and it's a lot more flexible. So with the new internal memory you are loosing some of the flexibility you once had with the bundled memory unit.
