Nice man, love the DVD drive cover.. pretty sick. Will it be okay to cover up the vent holes on the top of the 360? Not sure if your gonna have problems with cooling because of that or not, and I doubt it just putting that idea out there. Looking forward to seeing the rest of this WIP

Thats a HD DVD case. It doesnt matter if you cover the holes. its just a dvd drive, not the 360

Progress Update:

Well i have been spending way to much time in photoshop and illustrator the last week (not including the 2 days i spent building a htpc) but i have gotten a good amount of work done on the case.

I originally wanted to just cut out some letter from the case but when i drew it up it just dident look right so i scraped that idea and just made a window and used a font simluar to the one on the bottom of my original xbox (l00k at my sig) and im happy with it.
IPB Image
it will be activated fluorescent blue behind it.

after i cut out that window the side was looking kinda plain so i decided to do up some sleek flames.
IPB Image
IPB Image
I cant believe how good that came out, considering the 1/32" drill bit just wanted to eat everything it came in contact with, i have spend 2 days sanding it and it still need more (hopefully the filer primer will fill it alittle bit more next coat).

I finally got the dvd cover mounted.
IPB Image

The CPU Heatsink is looking alot more shinny.
IPB Image

I have decided to scrap the idea of 1 (db25) cable to the drive since i would have to run a sata cable the whole way anyways (i.e. in the db25) and it would be easier to flash with a sata port on the back, so i got 2 sata to esata external ports and a 3.3ft esata cable on the way (should be here next week).

I will post an update when i get the main parts painted and this db25 cable wired with a working power cable route thru.

Merry Christmas!

Edit: I Forgot to mention that i got the console, i have alreddy removed some capacitors (im using shorter ones) and i will get that ready for some in depth temp testing tomorrow, i will update with the results.

also i think i might need someone with a clean room to help with this project so if you or someone you know has access to a clean room please pm me.

Edit: Progress Update:
I got everything moved for the heatsinks and i replaced all the capacitors im going to with shorter ones (just the ones around the heatsink) its been on for just over an hour now (idle) and the temps are as expected.

VGA=GPU.
there was one spike up to 130 (cpu) about 30mins in to testing but it came back down to 120 after about 3mins.

im going to put the case back on and do some more idle and some ncaa 08 testing.

Progress Update:

I got the main parts of the Case painted up, i will have to wait a week for the paint to cure before i can add clear.

IPB Image
IPB Image
IPB Image

I couldent really get a good pic of the metal flake flames, i intentionally kept them as light as possible (i dident want them extremely noticeable)
IPB Image

for the skulls i printed then used an exacto to cut them out, applied a very thin coat of rubber cement over the back then applied them to the white paint (then painted black over it)
IPB Image

I finally got the drive cable done and working (im waiting on some 1/2" shrink rap for the extension/external cable).
IPB Image

after about 10 days looking for a design i like for the tray i finally found one (and modified it with illustrator), i should have it cut tonight and i will post an update once its painted.

nice paint... but why are you waiting a week to lay down some clear? If you used an airbrush then you can just put down a couple coats of transparent base and wait 48 hours. Now if you used rattle-can then I guess it could be a whole week.

Are you going to paint the dvd drive internally too? I would be a little concerned with paint rubbing off overtime on discs, but that may be just me.

-
but seriously, that's a nice paint job.. should look bad-ass once you get some clear on those ghost flames.

im using rattle cans and its pretty cold, i have had plenty of problems with cracking before so im not taking any chances this time.

im gonna leave the frame black, i have already painted the pieces of the drive case that are left and i will paint the tray when im done cleaning up this cut, i have painted atleast 5 other trays including Glow in the Dark and i haven't had any problems with the paint rubbing off.

you are probably right to wait off on clear coat, better safe then sorry. (just an FYI, not nessarily intended for you, Grim187). the paint inside of a rattle can is solvent based, which can be temperamental... especially in cold weather.

---
As for the painting the dvd trays... I never considered that an option before. I always feared the worse even after a solid, clean coat of primer, color and clear coat. I will have to give that a try sometime. ph34r.gif

ya i know spray paint isent great but i just cant justify a $60 compressor and at least 3 brushes that are $40-$150 each.

Im assuming pro painters like a warm environment to spray in because the paint drys faster but i have had the best results in cold weather, i seem to have less problems with the clear, there isent a bunch of junk in the air (dust, hair etc.) which i worry about because i paint in my shed and the paint drys to the touch almost as fast as i can apply it (ya it gets that cold here).

so all in all if im using spray cans i prefer 10F or lower temperatures, side note: a draw down of the cold weather is you will get frost nip (early stages of frost bite) thruout your hand(s) if you paint for longer then about 10mins.

small update: i got the tray sanded as smooth as i could without breaking parts off and i got the console cage cut up real nice, i should have paint on the tray tomorrow and i will post an update then.

Hey grim, great looking xbox! I'm currently modding my wii into a hd dvd drive. After seeing your WIP, I realised I forgot a bottom window ohmy.gif It'd have looked so much better with one, showing the wii motherboard....oh well.

I also really like the window you did on the front and the side, really original.

keep up the great work! cool.gif
