I have a softmoded Xbox that is using EvoX to boot, and I mistakenly renamed default.xbe to default.xbe.old via FTP and I rebooted the xbox w/out replacing the default.xbe file, and now I get:
IPB Image

And my xbox LED is blinking all the colors.

So I've removed the HD, and I installed it in a spare computer I have that is running Ubuntu 8.04, and I tried to boot w/ the HD attached and upon bootup I got the following error messages:
CODE
ata1.01 status: { DRDY ERR }
ata1.01 error: { ABRT }
ata1.01 exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 activ 0x0

So I figured the xbox hd isn't playing nice with ubuntu, so I searched google for a solution to mounting an xbox hd in ubuntu and I found XUbuntu, I figured that has gotta work, and I downloaded and burned the ISO to a CD, plopped it into my computer's CD-Rom drive and began booting, what do you know more errors:
CODE
Hdb: task_in_intr: status = 0x51 {Drive Ready SeekComplete Error}
Hdb: task_in_intr: error = 0x04 {Drive Status Error}
Ide: failed opcode was: unknown

So, apparently I can't mount this HD using a computer, so what can I do to get back in there and rename default.xbe.old back to default.xbe ?

Ok after some further research I see I did make a backup of the following for this xbox's HD:
  • bios.bin
  • disk.bin
  • eeprom.bin
  • hddinfo.txt
  • hddkey.bin

So now how do I use this to get back into my HD so that I can rename default.xbe.old back to default.xbe ?

Would this topic be better served if it were posted in the Xbox Backup Forum or is this the right place?

if you have your eeprom.bin all you need is xboxhdm 1.9 or the latest either one and with untouched C and E drive contents to rebuild(reformat) your HDD by making a bootable CD with the iso maker that comes with xboxhdm and bruning it to a cd/dvd-rw, for this I used dvds and powerISO. I really wont go into specifics of what steps are needed but I used a good tut I found to make my 320 gb hard drive here:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/533828

I also noticed an option to delete, copy, and rename files by typing in xbrowser so maybe you could use that to rename your default.xbe.old back to default.xbe again. I have no experience using that option but it may save you the data on the harddrive because if you reformat it it you will lose all your data.

Also you agree to not hold me or anyone else responsible when trying any of this stuff as well as any outside references or links I have given and their authors, as well.

Hope this helps man. happy.gif

Thanks for the nudge "red_ring_of_box"
5hrs of figuring out the proper ide cable layout (I thought they ment two separate channels i.e. IDE0 & IDE1, not IDE0 slave/master), and then figuring out that I needed to unlock the drive before I could gain access via xbrowser (midnight commander) :duh:
and then reading up on the proper use of midnight commander (BTW, shift+f6 renames the file inplace)...

And after all that ...

It's FIXED !!! biggrin.gif

Thanks again RRoXbox biggrin.gif

if you use auto installer deluxe you can go into file manager load up your dashboard then just ftp into it that way.

When i messed mine up i install xbmc and configured the internet settins and all was good =].

you will want to find evox.xbe or default.xbe i think mine was under dash on the e drive

I'm having problems setting up my new HDD at the moment, I have a back-up of my retail HDD and can ftp my xbox with the new harddrive in, is it possible to just delete everything in the C-Z folders and ftp over the back-up files in their place?
