Microsoft sold 28 million Xbox 360s by end of 2008
Posted by XanTium | January 5 23:49 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From reuters.com:
[QUOTE]
Microsoft Corp sold 28 million units worldwide of its Xbox 360 video game console through the end of 2008, expanding the Xbox's lead over rival Sony Corp's PlayStation 3 console in worldwide unit sales, the company said on Monday.

Xbox 360 product management director Aaron Greenberg said 2008 "was our biggest year ever in Xbox history" despite a sluggish global economy that's battered U.S. retailers this past holiday season.

Rising unemployment and tighter credit have dented U.S. consumers' purchasing power and most retailers have posted dismal sales results in recent months.

Microsoft said global unit sales of the Xbox 360, which was launched about a year before the PS3, outpaced its rival by over 8 million units at the close of 2008.

Why should people need to buy another one if it does have the rrod it's covered by extended warranty so that shouldn't add to sales figures.

If anything was going to add to sales figures it would be more likely the ban hammer but even still I think the sales figures are so good because of the 360's current price everyone i know got one around xmas time.

Because you get a crappy Opus return, you might as well save a few bob and get a Jasper Arcade and use your current HDD and sell the Opus.

28 million ... equates to about 7 million dead xbox360s

Just shows how gullible people can be when it comes to buying things.

So the failure rate is now 25%, or is it still what everyone thinks it is at 33% and just your bad at math? wink.gif

You know, it's still amusing to see people bring up the RROD. The damn problem is covered by warranty so as a consumer, if the problem arises, I know I won't have to pay to get it repaired.

Just drop the RROD arguement already.

I chose the 360 for the games available on the platform - plain and simple. That also explains why you see stories of people who are on their N-th 360 despite the RROD problem. While there are some out there who would just throw their hands up and buy a competing console, the trend seems to be that many of the 360 owners are quite brand loyal.

Hey,

Add in bans. Not that that is Microsoft's problem that people chose to mod their system it still contributes to higher sales numbers.

Not all consoles are covered. My launch console just died and I had to buy a new one. The 3 year warranty is expiring now for many consoles.

Hey,

Agreed. We have sent our, what started out as a launch 360 in many times. I think it came with a 90 day from the last repair warranty so in Feb. it will no longer be covered.

With the original Xbox I think MS sent out a form to get another two years of warranty every 2 years. Wonder why they don't do that with the 360. Probably because it will pretty force people to buy another one.

I think MS is quite happy that the 3 year period is starting to end and that they won't have to keep repairing (as many)old systems.

Not if it's second hand. If the machine was registered with Microsoft, then sold on, the 3 year warranty goes out the window. It shouldn't, but it does. One of the benefits of non-registration.

Except that there are nearly 135 million PS2s out there, so even with replacements, that is a lot, and now over 40 million Wiis, that is a hell of a lot of gamers that have eschewed next-gen graphics.

i'm guessing the 17million live users gets us closer to actual 360s functioning in homes. If you said say 22 million alive 360s that doesn't put them that far ahead of the 20 million PS3s, though i guess a lot of the early units might only be used as bluray players.

Except that the older models are now out of warranty.
