Having a system that can handle 1.5M simultaneous users isn't easy...

My server with can't handle more than 800 simultaneous users...

There should be a lot of people on this board that are out of money. They were swearing up and down this holiday season would be a disaster and how live would be down for a long periods of time.

1.5 million? Bet it's not Active Directory based then! Probably Novell eDirectory, that'll handle the load.

I wonder if those boys over at MS were sweatin' it watching those load spikes or if they still had plenty of cushion.

We'll never know since Sony's service will never be impressive enough to even come close to that number of concurrent users. tongue.gif

Of course, this is a joke. In reality, their services I thought are documented to grind to a hault at unbelievably small numbers and if true, 1.5 concurrent users would simply destroy their network.

Curious, isn't 1.5 concurrent users somewhere around 1 in 10 Xbox 360 owners currently online? More? Less? It's got to be something close to that, which is very impressive imo. Well done, MS!

It's amazing how XBL continues enormous growth beyond even MS's expectations. Imagine 5 years from now, if MS continues their Xbox and XBL success, we'll likely see 1.5 concurrent users every minute of every day I'd bet.

But if you read two news articles back where its stated over 28mil xboxes sold in 2008 to the LIVE useage rate of 1.5mil. thats only a 18.6 percent attachment rate of users that purchase the console for online use.

1.5mil may sound like a huge number but you have to figure in the amount of people around the world that use the 360 then that number seems like nothing.

It's funny how you thought out all that, but it never dawned on you they said "simultaneous." Not everyone is online at any given time, especially since when it's 6PM here in Texas it's 6AM in China. 1.5 Million Simultaneous users is amazing... even more amazing is the amount of money MS is raking in with this service. This is probably one of the most profitable products they've ever released.

BTW... I mentioned in a post back in November how they opened this huge 450,000 ft² server facility in San Antonio, TX. Just one of several I would assume.

I'm lucky when mine supports 3 at once. That's what I get for having a 5 year old server.

Do I count as one of these 1.5mill when I'm just connected but not actively using it, or douse it only count if your connected to a game on XBL?

I think I heard that Microsoft's big servers are a version of Unix. Even if they are windows, I doubt that all the gamertags are in an active directory environment.

As previously stated, it's simultaneous users. Which is pretty good. I suppose the next question should be whether they only count gamers or if silver users are in there too (I bet they are).

Oh BTW, your math is off. 1.5 is not 18.6% of 28. It's about 5%

So where do you think you hear this from? Or is this another example of someone pretending to "hear" information that he made up himself? Just another variation of the random "I have a friend..." or "I know a guy..." stories so common on the internet.

Realistically it's very doubtfull that Microsoft would use anything other their their own products, or variations of such, to run XLive. But, I guess it would certainly give some very shallow people a smug sense of self satisfaction to find Microsoft using someone elses OS to run their servers.
