CES 09: MS Responds To Sony's Console Add-On 'Peddling' Claims
Posted by XanTium | January 9 22:12 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From kotaku.com:
[QUOTE]
Earlier this week, Sony sent us an oddly timed media bulletin, trumpeting the PlayStation 3's value versus the Wii and Xbox 360. It also accused Nintendo and Microsoft of "peddling add-ons." What say you, Microsoft?

"First, I would say we absolutely would not want to trade places with Sony," said Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360. "We feel like being half the price of the PS3 served us quite well this holiday."

"The fact that we're doing this at half the price of their platform, we feel confident that we're delivering great value," he added. "I believe that we deliver more value for games and entertainment than any other platform on the market."

I love how his response doesn't even remotely answer the question.

To be fair, the question as phrased by kotaku was "what say you, Microsoft?" ... so the statement does at least answer the question... albeit not a very adequate answer.

Nonetheless, Sony's Press Release doesn't really require an answer from Microsoft. Sony factors in the price of Live, which many xbox owners will still contend is worth the money (although PSN could very well, in time, be a comparable service for free), and the wireless adapter isn't exactly the most useful of add-ons. Nobody will argue that gaming around the house is a much more pleasant experience on a wired network (less chance of network interference...). That said, wireless is nice when using the 360 as a media center extender.

Sony really is just trying to push buttons with this stuff. Nice to see microsoft held back.

Strange though... the PS3 has a handful of big advantages over the 360 (Blu Ray & PSP integration to start), and sony makes no mention of those things... how odd.

I hate reading this crap...

Sony is like the drunk guy at the bar trying to make themselves look good by bad mouthing everyone else around them.

Honestly their attitude as a corporation and the face they put on publicly has turned me away from their product more than any other factor.

I don't associate with people who act that way in person... why would I want to associate with a company that does.

LIVE is not required, although it is well worth the money in comparison to PSN. Smart users will purchase 12 + 1 month cards for $38.99 instead of paying direct through credit card at $50.00 for 12 months.

Wireless is not required. Smart users will purchase a $30.00 router and configure it as a wireless access point. Not only will that work with your Xbox, but can be used with anything that uses ethernet to make it wireless (and it has multiple ports). Currently using that on my PC and Xbox 360 as well as a printer.

Do they factor into the PS3 the need to purchase a cable to output High-Definition? No, the PS3 comes standard with composite. You need to upgrade in order to get HD.

The game can be played both ways.

I just received my 13 month card from walmart yesterday. $40 for 13 months is not bad at all. Oh and I bought a used wireless adapter from Game Stop back in summer 07. They don't wear out, so it works like new, but I paid half the price. The router is cheaper and more flexible, but the adapter fits on and is out of the way.

How i look at it is that with the PS3, Sony is selling me features that I don't want. I don't want wireless, if I had a PS3 I would have it plugged in to my network. Bluray...don't give a damn about it. Fact of the matter is, if the PS3 was the same price as the XBOX 360 and didn't have wirelss and bluray, I would own a PS3. And Sony needs to get rid of that awful controller as well.

Same school of thought here.

And the Dual Shock either needs an update or needs to be retired. That controller was revolutionary and amazing back in 1998, and is obviously responsible for the design of the 360 controller, amongst others, but the controller is over a decade old now... time for a design update.

It has been updated, it has imitation triggers now. The strange thing is that most of the shooting games don't use the triggers. They use the R1 button which is the RB equiv.

When Sony defeated Hd-dvd I did not see them crying about the Wii or x360 sony used the ps3 as a trojan horse for people to adapt the blue ray format not only that but they paid movie industries alot of money to go exclusive. stop crying and remove the dam blue ray from the ps3 and lower your prizes not many gamers care about a gaming machine being able to play hd movies yet($), ps2 was a gaming machine with the option of being able to play movies witch was a plus. ps2 was not used as a trojan horse to push a new movie format( give us options) I have a ps3 witch I bought after Hd-dvd lost I still think Hd-dvd was a better format(complete) sony won the format war and now because there sales arent doing so good they are crying trying to make WII and x360 look like the bad guys they cant pay anybody else now consumers at the end will decide what products are worth buying and a great prize..........stop crying sony, you chose your fate...... and now your paying for it..

The old what you get for your money debate again.
We all know the PS3 has more included stuff, the fact is the price is higher to pay for it. If you bought the same stuff for the 360 the prices would not be vastly different. At present the cost of the initial purchase of the PS3 is too much and it is proven that people are buying the 360 and can then spread the costs of anything extra they may want.
I don't understand why Sony would rake this old chestnut up again.
Ms should not have bothered responding at all and Sony need to employ some new staff in certain areas.
The whole marketing or lack of it and the stupid statements made at times when they are clearly not selling lots of consoles means they should look closely at who they employ to take care of these things.

It's true. until this holiday season i could scarcely remember a single playstation3 television ad. The marketing group at the playstation division of Sony needs to be canned. They really have dropped the ball.

I was going to get a Ps3 this x-mas but I didn't and the reason why is I can't see spending 400 dollars for something that didn't even have a game included. I paid 260 for a arcade with guitar world tour ,guitar 3 ,a wireless guitar, sonic,5 arcade games then i went online and got the hd in 3 months for an extra 30.I really want a ps3 bad but i just can't see spending that kind of money for the whole 3 or 4 games I want on the ps3.

for a long time Sony shut the hell up after months of continuous bashing the competition without actually having anything to brag about themselves.
now yet again they bash the competition, seemingly unaware of the fact both their competitors have sold far more units of their current console.

let's face it, the PSN is a joke, Sony doesn't seem to know the meaning of "launch title" given how Killzone 2 was announced at launch but still isn't out, GT5 being another utter joke on that part.

and don't even get me started on how Sony uses out of date retail prices for the 360, get an Xbox 360 elite plus a wireless adapter plus a 512 MB memcard and you're still a standalone blu-ray player's price under the PS3's price.
they also fail to take into account the fact that xbox live also comes in a silver formula with occasional free weekends and you get high-quality active cheat protection.

you can get the wifi adapter for about 70$/€/£ in decent stores, and the 120 gig HDD for 80 $/€/£, for both the wifi and 120gig drive that's a lot less than the figures Sony claims, boom, the 360 is already under the PS3's price, minus another 50 cause live can be joined for free too.

also, where the hell are bundled games for the PS3? in the holiday seasons all 360 versions came with 2 games included, that's at least 100$/€/£ worth of extra value, plus the 50-30 refund you got with some stores.
with those bundles and the refund, the 360's value for money beats the PS3 hands-down.

Sony's actions have only confirmed what I already suspected, their reign of terror is over and they're starting to notice it, this looks like just a desperate attempt at getting some attention.
