Pachter: Xbox 360 and PS3 Price Cut in April - June?
Posted by XanTium | January 13 00:29 EST | News Category: Xbox360
From gamedaily.com: [QUOTE] "Once the PS3 is at a more affordable price point (we expect a cut to $299 in April), we think that sales of that device will once again begin to grow. We expect another cut in price for the Xbox 360, with the feature-laden Pro model likely to come down in price to $249 at or before this year's E3 show in June. We expect Nintendo to maintain Wii pricing at $249 until the company sees signs that demand is slowing, which means a price cut may not happen until late in the year, if at all," Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter said. Well someone will finally breath relief they finally see it fit to drop the price of the PS3. I expect sales to only pick up slightly as customers still walk around aimlessly wondering what to do with their new piece of hardware.

PS3 defiantly needs a price cut. The price of blu-ray players has dramatically dropped. It is no longer cost effective to get a 400 dollar ps3 as a blu ray player. When you can find blue ray players for 150 to 200 bucks.
If I can buy a blu-ray player and a 360 for the same price as a ps3 sony is definatly doing somthing wrong with their pricing.

You are so anti PS3 it's untrue. I know this is an Xbox forum but your adoration for the 360 and the need to dismiss anything PS3 shows you for what you are. The bit in bold is unjustified and complete bullshit from you and I don't apologise for telling you that. If you don't know what to do with yours then sell it or maybe you are limited by your imagination.
As for Patcher. half the stuff he says never happens.

It won't be a huge cut for the PS3. Sony is already in the hole as a corp and will be so hosed if they take a loss on the PS3 again and sales remain flat.

If you spend that kind of money on it and don't know what to do with it after, that doesn't show a problem with the machine, only with the user. Anyways, a price cut would be very tempting indeed because a friend of mine just showed me Little Big Planet and that game looks amazing. Reminded me of when Donkey Kong Country came out .

From what I gather they're almost breaking even at the 400 dollar price point, so once they drop it, they're back in the hole again. I wonder if they'll ever turn a profit on that thing.
XBOX seemed to be in a much better position these days to sell at a profit?

Sony need to either drop the price, or add PS2 support to make themselves competitive in the UK. I know a few people with PS3s, and the lack of PS2 compatibility has pissed them off. That is also the reason I don't think i'll ever get one, which is a shame as it is a nice piece of hardware. As for Blu-Ray, for about £150 I can get a decent Blu-Ray player, which, even if bought at the same time as a 360, still works out less than a PS3. If the PS3 comes down to about £200 or they add PS2 support, then I will be tempted.

Don't forget to mention that Dolly Parton sleeps on her back. A> Yes, the PS3 will sell better with a lower price. Name something that doesn't sell better when you lower the price. There are a couple things, but can't say in a family oriented forum ;?) Heck, I even bought a PS3 during the Live.com promotion where Microsoft basically gave me $100 off the price of a PS3... now that is funny right there! B> Yes, Microsoft aggressively drives the cost down of their console. Amazing the deductive powers put to work here suggesting that Microsoft wants to push the costs down and be even more competitive. Maybe when my console goes in for its 6th hardware failure I could afford to just buy a new one outright and sell the refurbished one and cut my losses. C> Yes, Nintendo won't have any reason to lower the price until they start having a surplus of Wiis.... Someone has been brushing up on their basic econmocis! Good job! I am glad I didn't have to stand in line for one for more than an hour and a half 2 years ago. I've waited about as long for food and food, unlike the wii, has zero replay / friend sharing value...
I see Pachter is trying to compete this year for the master of the obvious award. I'll have my work cut out for me.... usually that is my title.

Of all the people I talk to who have ps2 compatable ps3's, none of them use their ps3 for ps2 games. Oh a lot thought they would, but after playing all the new games, ps2 games just don't hold up in comparison.
I know this won't be the case for everyone, but I can see how most people would be like this, even if they think they want ps2 compatability.
As far as profitiblity, most console makers in the past relied heavily on software sales for profit. Only the Wii has really changed this model, and has been making money off of the console for most if not all of the time it was out. This is not new, and should not worry anyone, least of all sony. They always knew they would take a hit on the hardware side.

I think it is a bit different in Europe with the popularity of the Singstar Games, God of War and other PS2 titles that sell well over there. Sony has announced a weird system where you can now play the PS2 singstar games on the PS3, but yeah the PS3 gets more affordable if I can hock my PS2 and some old games for $100 or trade it in.

Really? Someone you knows decides I'll go buy a PS3 because my buddy Chancer (or whatever your name is) has one. Then suddenly he's stuck in a position of not knowing what else to buy other than the console. Assuming he's taken care of with an HDTV and HDMI cables, what are your suggestions?
Now take the other friend who has many consoles. He's had every popular system since the original Nintendo (that excludes things like 3D0 and N-Gage). He has all the current gen systems except the Sony ones. That means DS, Wii, 360, plus older ones like PS2 and game cube. He even plays a few PC games. He buys his final current gen system (the PS3) and then asks you what else should he buy. What are your suggestions then?
I've been there, and that second question gets very hard to answer when obviously it seems like the better decision is to buy on the 360 rather than the PS3 and the PS3 exclusives count is close to none. Take away everything except the 360 and the question is STILL hard to answer. The next question is... what can I do with this other than play blurays? That's a good question, because although there are a few titles that are fun on PS3, after a while they get old.

I keep hearing about this. I don't see it happening unless Sony isn't as far in the hole as we have been lead to believe. From what we have been told, Sony has been losing a butt load of money on each PS3 (an estimated $400 when it first came out, hasn't changed much). They will eventually need to make up that money somehow.
Option 1 is to use profits from other parts of Sony to make up the difference. This is possible and probably has been how the PS3 is still around. I don't see it continuing to happen.
Option 2 is to sell much more software and attachments. This may be coming but isn't there yet. (LBP made 1.3mill sales since release? Wasn't that suppose to be the latest PS3 savior?)
Option 3 is to start selling the console at a profit and attempt to make up some lost money before they finally cut the price. They will keep the price as high as they can for as long as they can. This is the logical outcome. Isn't the PS3 selling more now than before? Would it not be logical to keep selling at this current price until that changes?
This story was started by Microsoft in an attempt to force Sony into a price cut. If Microsoft has to take a $50 price cut on the Pro, they probably won't feel it. I don't think at this point Sony can take a $100 cut on the PS3 and I don't see that changing by much by April.
This is all still assuming that Sony is as bad off as we have been lead to believe. Who knows, Sony may have some fight left in them, but they need to start fighting soon. Hay, even Nintendo had a bad run with the GameCube.
