My friend just got a wii a few weeks back. He wants to softmod it. He was gonna put a modchip on it, but he might have epoxy inside on his chip, so we didn't want to mess with that.

So considering he has a newer console, what would be the best option for a softmod?

Find out his system version. If he has a 4.0 there isn't a softmod available yet. If it is <4.0 there are things you can do depending on the version, but don't upgrade to 4.0 or you are done.

and if it is less then a 4.0 I recommend using the softmii package. The package comes with all the needed apps, and saves you need. It also a little brick protection and you can use custom themes for the system menu

Check out a modchip called drivekey for the wii. It plugs into the dvd cable, no soldering but does cost alot more than a wiikey or softmod. Just another option. So you don't have to mess with the epoxy.

Here's a link to see what it looks like.

i don't know about "better", but they get the job done without the soldering etc.

i agree, i dont think they are better, probably better for someone who is careful and knows what they are doing

but remember the early days of xbox sofmods, where loading the wrong game would update your dash and break the mod, those days live on in the wii (except now they can break your entire wii, not just the mod....)

with preloader the disk updates are overlooked and it also gives a basic brick block to. But from my understanding about the drive chips they just allow you to. With the softmodded Wii you can do about the same amount of stuff with the Wii as you could with the Xbox1. I mean the Xbox1 is far easier to softmod but the end result is about the same. Except you can still play online with a softmodded Wii. And I know you dont have to update to play online mine is a 3.2u and i never get propted to update on any game
