I'm using a soft-modded Xbox and I can't get it to authenticate to a share on my PC. The share is "\\192.168.1.2\Videos". I accessed it in the past with XP and Vista in XBMC by going to My Videos > Workgroup (SMB) Network > Workgroup (name of my workgroup) > MeinKampf-puter (name of my computer) > Videos. The problem is that when I put in my username and password at the point where I choose my computer, it just prompts me again and again because it's not authenticating. The username is xbox and the password is xbox. Both my PC and Xbox are connected to a Linksys router and the Xbox has a static IP of 192.168.1.3. Here is what I've tried:
xbox account has read NTFS and share permissions
Restarted Server service
Turned off Windows Firewall
Tried connecting Xbox directly to computer with ICS
Changed Network to a "Home" network in Network and Sharing Center
Turned on network discovery, file and printer sharing, sharing so everyone with network access can read and write files in Public folders
Allow media streaming to all networks
Enable file sharing for devices that use 40 or 56-bit encryption
Turned off password protected sharing
Change Local Security Settings as follows:
Network access: do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts: Disabled
Network access: do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares: Disabled
Network access: let everyone permissions apply to anonymous users: Enabled
Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares: Disabled
Network access: Shares that can be access anonymously: F:\Videos
Network security: Allow Local System to use computer identity for NTLM: Enabled
Network security: LAN Manager authentication level: send LM & NTLMv2 session security if negotiated
Network security: Restict NTLM: NTLM authentication in this domain: Disable
Also installed XP in a virtual machine and it's able to connect to it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Nevermind, fixed it by editing the smb share locations to "smb://workgroup;xbox:xbox@192.168.1.2/videos"

I have the same problem.
Did you make the change above in the xbmc/userdata/sources.xml file?

I have shared the entire drive (D:) on Win7 and have made all the changes as you did in post#1, plus I added <path> tags in the sources.xml file, including the username/password - but it still comes up with the Lock screen asking for un/pw, and which then doesn't let me in anyway.

I can access a Vista laptop and a XP desktop without problem from the xbox, just not the Win7 box, even with everything opened up (firewall off, password protection off, anti-virus off (uninstalled!), folders shared with Everyone Read access)

Any ideas?

An out of work MCSE like myself is good for something at least tongue.gif

I was having this same issue and found a fix that has worked for a lot of people so far. Let me know if it works for any of you.

My original post below:

I have been having the exact same problem. And like many here, I tried everything listed and none of it worked.

But I DID find a solution without changing ANY settings whatsoever on my machine.

I know for a fact it had been working earlier this morning. The only change I had made was installing the new Windows Live Sign-In Assistant ver6.5 i think it was and linking my live ID to my windows user account (im using win7 ultimate 64bit btw).

After trying everything listed and several reboots, I uninstalled the sign-in assistant and it immediately began to work again.

So guys, give this a try and let me know if it helps anyone else. Leave it to microsoft to make security changes to your system with an unrelated install.

- qtip

edit: of course you also have to make sure you have enabled file sharing for devices that use 40 or 56-bit encryption in the network settings but other than that you dont have to change anything else other than uninstalling the sign in assistant.

I'd just like to say that I had this problem and the above post was exactly the solution. I was on Win7 x64 and I had installed the LiveID thing (I don't even really know what that did, I never even noticed what it changed) and had some network trouble with XBMC for a while. Well, I finally got time to troubleshoot and found this post which fixed everything perfectly. I would have never thought of it either. Thanks Mr. Unemployed MCSE wink.gif

P.S. Yeah, no kidding. What good did that Sign-In assistant actually DO anyway...?

Hey guys. I've figured out a fix for this. Because you are using a computer specific user account you need to use the computer name in the smb address, like this:
CODE
smb://[computername]\[username]:[password]@[computername]/[sharename]
for example
CODE
smb://mypc\xbox:xbox@mypc/movies

hope that helps

Cheers

Where exactly do you enter that SMB address string? In the Add Sources section? Or do you have to edit an xml file?
Thanks

When adding an SMB source via the GUI, you'd enter the "[computername]\[username]" bit into the "Server name" field - though I gather this shouldn't be required with later versions of XBMC.

Thanks but I actually got it to work by editing the sources.xml file.
Oddly enough it would not work by using the Add Source button no matter how I tried...

Oh my fu$%&/ GOD

thank you people for mentioning the Windows Live ID thing!!!

So i sat there yesterday bored on halloween fiddeling with Media Extender and the 360 and somehow i installed a codec pack with the bing toolbar bundled. I must have unchecked the wrong box because i didnt want the tool bar in the first place but it got installed anyway. So then i go to my xbox and the smb shares are being rejected by the server.

I was getting more pissed by the minute and then i eventually gave up trying to figure wtf happend. This morning i googled and this was the first post and sure enough its the live id crap. Deinstalled. It works like in the previous 48 months.

THANK YOU. You guys made my day biggrin.gif

I created an account with the sole purpose of Thanking posters here for identifying MS Sign-in Assistant. Would have taken me hours if not days to attempt removing MSN 2011 update. (installed it yesterday, everything broke sleep.gif).

Thanks again happy.gif
