Hello everyone,

I wanted to ask a quick question. On 2 of my backups, I get a disc unreadable error when copying the games to the hard drive, but what is the most strange is that both of the errors occur at 50% on both discs. One of the games, Skate 2, gives me occasional unreadable errors while in game, while Resident Evil 5 seems fine in game. I haven't played RE5 too much so I am not sure if the errors will pop up also. On my 3rd backup I have not experienced any problems in game and I have not tried copying to the HDD. Could this be due to my setup?

I am using my laptop's DVD burner which is a Matshita UJ-841S and I am using Memorex DVD's which are made by Ritek, which I suspect may be a part of the problem. Could the burner also be causing a problem? What gets me is that both of the errors occur half way through the discs, and when I scan the Skate 2 DVD with Nero none of the sectors are damaged.

Thanks for any help you can give me or advice.

By the way, I use abgx on all of the discs before I burn them. I have not ran them through the verify feature in IMGBurn, would that possibly help me narrow down the problem?

Could be the burner or the media or your xbox dvd drive.
50% would be around about the start of the 2nd layer on the dvd.
First try better media tho as thats the cheapest thing to test.

Thanks for the response,
That is interesting to note. I verified my Skate 2 backup with the .iso in ImgBurn and it did not come up with any errors which is puzzling. I would of thought that it would have a read error or something of the sort.

First off... i have tried memorex and they suck so hard its not even funny... about a good 40-50% are coasters(at least coming from my burner). I would start by getting new media, rule of thumb is verbatims. Yes, they are a little spendy but check here in the forums, they have a sticky for good verbatim deals.... Try those and see if it helps(most of the time its the media, but sometimes it really is xbox dvd rom itself)... If not we should head down the lovely road of Pot calibration on your dvd drive, Have you ever done this before... If not there are some great tutorials around for it.

As far as your burner... it could be cuasing it, try updating to latest firmware.... you have to kill off all other possibilities first before saying the burner is bupkis unfortunetly... i had to go through that, was using memorex crap as well, when i got verbatims everything worked, so my drive was A OK

My drive in my xbox does make alot of straining sounds when trying to read my backups. Sometimes while playing the drive seems to fully drop down in speed and then speed back up again, as well and making alot of reading sounds. Could the laser be the problem? I have no issues with original games so I don't know.

Really it just depends... I had that same issue where originals worked flawlessly... I had to replace my laser... but i would try the pot calibration first, It does sound like you are having laser issues... try cleaning and pot calibration and let me know how it goes

I have been thinking about the fact that this is where the second layer starts. I don't manually enter in the layerbreak, could that be the problem? I thought that this was automatically done and stored in the .DVD file and only had to be entered in a long time ago. The discs all verify fine so this has to be the problem, maybe the xbox is seeing the wrong layerbreak and gives an error?

it does work automatically... most of the time it doesnt work when you do i manually, give it a try but without verbatims your probably barking up the wrong tree... unless in the time this thread has been going you picked some up instead of memorex
