Rumour: Xbox 360 to get one terabyte HDD?
Posted by XanTium | June 24 12:39 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From techradar.com:
[QUOTE]
A whopping one terabyte hard drive is rumoured to be in development for the next iteration of Microsoft's Xbox 360 console.

The increased capacity hard drive is rumoured to be launched at the same time with as Project Natal.

Industry analysts have identified the limited storage space of the current Xbox 360 range as a major feature holding the tech back right now, particularly with the rapid developments in movies and games on demand services via Xbox Live.

"I don't see the timing between new release and digital download being a function of anything other than hard drive sizes," analyst Michale Pachter told GamesIndustry.biz. "I think as soon as we have large hard drives - think the rumoured Project Natal 'new' Xbox 360 with a terabyte of storage in 2010 - we'll have day-and-date downloads."

It's about time MS starts releasing HD sizes that are actually current. With the size of the current 360 HDs you'd think this was 2004. Piddly little 20GB-60GB drives and such. Now as long as they don't try to charge $400 for it...

I seriously doubt that. Currently, the largest 2.5" HDDs available have a 500 GB capacity. In order to get 1 TB, they'd either have to move up to the 3.5" range (I don't see how you could fit a 3.5" on any current iteration of the Xbox 360) or make the enclosure a bit taller and shove two 500 GB drives in RAID inside it. If you were to buy two of the cheapest 2.5" 500 GB HDDs from Newegg, it would cost $170. Of course, Microsoft would get a fairly large discount for buying them in bulk, but they also have to pay for the enclosure, the SATA to proprietary Xbox 360 HDD adaptor, and the RAID controller. Considering what they charge for the current 120 GB drive, can you imagine what they would charge for 1 TB?

Considering the 120GB HDD by itself is anywhere between $139.99 and $179.99 brand new, depending on where you go, I would expect the 1TB hard drive to be no less than $500. Good job MS. If not that, it will definitely be priced at, or more than the current 360 arcade system.

It's pretty sad when a game console ACCESSORY is more expensive, or almost as expensive as the console itself. Needless to say, I'll either be making my OWN 1TB hdd, or only get one if the price is right.

agreed, but its still good news. even if the 1tb rumor ends up being false, maybe it will be partially accurate and we will see 500's or 750's. (don't forget, this is supposed to be fall 2010, not this year)

I think if we do see drives this big then they'll be built into a slim 360. That would be a pretty sweet package smile.gif .

Yes and no, the way HDD's have been going these days in 6 months I think it would be possible for a 1TB HDD. I mean it seems like yesterday the 1tb/1.5tb HDD's were released and were like $500, now you can get a 1.5tb for as little as $89.

All in all.. if MS wants to go the route of disk-less ON-DEMAND content is the next big thing.. we are going to need ALOT more space than just 120GB. Even 500GB to me is on the small side cause the way they talked at e3 we would just start downloading our Xbox360 games and 10 of those can almost be 100GB and thats not including all your nice 1080p movies and TV shows.

That's what I'm hoping for. With a feature of the new dashboard being that you can play games from the hard drive, it's embarrassing we still only have the 120gb as the largest option. Please give us at least a 500gb drive!!

It's not a computer. Most games are 5-6GB according to the install statistics I've seen. @5GB that is 20 games for a 100GB hard drive. What is the average number of games per game console user? What is the average number of games a game console user plays at the same time and needs installed? If you are buying/downloading a tv show or movie for the Xbox 360, chances are you are intelligent enough to know it is being transfered to a medium you cannot take with you anywhere else (ie. a computer, portable media player) since it is locked to the 360 (and you will most likely watch it soon after purchase.) On the flipside.. once you "own" it you can download it again if you have to delete it for space, same goes for downloaded games.

Sure bigger is better but do you really think you need 20 games installed on your console at any given moment? It sucks to be a 0, 20, 60GB owner but they do offer a 120GB option which is plenty big.

The 360 does not allow you to put your own content on it, no putting your Divx/Xvid movies, photo album, mp3 collection, etc.. on the machine, it does just fine streaming them from a computer. You could spend less money buying a netbook + external hard drive and streaming it to your 360 if you are that desperate.

And lastly I just wanted to point out: It's not a computer.

I agree that pricing and availability do not make a 1TB drive upgrade for current 360's seem viable...

Both the 3.5" and the stacked 2.5" have too many issues to be overcome to make them reasonable to expect.

If we saw 320GB HD's I think that would be decent by Fall next year. Maybe even a 500GB, but I imagine that would be cost prohibitive... 1TB... I really don't see it happening next year.

we'll, this article is talking about Microsoft releasing a 1TB HDD alongside Natal - so that would be in 2010 & by then, we will have 2.5" 1TB HDD's

There is no way Microsoft will charge $500 for a 1TB HDD in 2010/11 - nobody will buy it.
It would be priced the same as the 120GB HDD is now as HDD prices will go down as time goes on & capacity will go up (also forcing prices down).

That may lead to inconstant HDD read speeds which may not help the console overall.
I'm not sure what would happen to existing games designed with the HDD in mind (HALO, Crackdown, Arcade titles), as a USB HDD would be much slower than a SATA one.
However, it would be fine for Photo's, Videos (+Marketplace) & Music - just like how the PS3 does it at the moment.

Sounds too good to be true. If it is true, I'll be amazed. My 120gb right now has 19gb left. I install my games and download tons of dlc and arcade games and demos. 120gb flies by.
