Arstechnica Mole: Elite to replace Pro Xbox 360 this fall?
Posted by XanTium | June 26 22:20 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From arstechnica.com:
[QUOTE]
Our favorite inside source has given us a heads-up on what to expect from both Sony and Microsoft this year in hardware packages and pricing.

Expect the Xbox 360 Pro to disappear in July or August, but you're going to see some solid bundles to get those systems moving off store shelves. The Halo 3/Fable 2 bundle the Mole previously tipped us off to shows that Microsoft is willing to put some good games into the box to get people buying.

So what are we going to do without the Pro systems? Nothing. The Elite units, with the 120GB hard drive, are going to become the Pro-level system after an early September price cut. We'll be on the lookout for another holiday bundle as well, and that should hit around October.

Sounds good.

The Elite will probably be replaced with a SKU with a larger HDD - most likely 320GB.

Hopefully they'll have some sense & release the HDD on it's own at retail at the same time the new SKU is launched.
Not that it matters to many of us on here - we would just want the SS.bin tongue.gif

Blah, I have a 120 gig hd and see no point in it. Should have gotten a 60 but they weren't available at the time.

Is there any real difference between discontinuing the "pro" and dropping the price on the elite and discontinuing the elite and upping the HDD size on the "pro"? Don't bother answering that, it's just something to ponder, like what is the sound of a tree clapping with one hand in the woods or something.

They need to drop the arcade and move the pro and elite down a price level. WHY do they still sell harddrive-less systems? Why did they EVER sell harddrive-less systems?

This makes no sense. Surely they would discontinue the arcade system. They would then price cut the pro and elite system. That way every one has a hard drive. See no point in arcade when so many upcoming services will use the harddrive

Well Walmart here in Canada has been killing of the arcade, by selling them at only $149 Canadian.

We suddenly have alot of new x360 owners now at that price in Canada.

They sold HDD-less systems because:

1) They had a HDD in every XBOX1 & hardly any developer made use if it - they did not want to make that mistake again.

2) It was cheaper (most likely the main reason)

Arcades are good for one thing - being a replacement console for when you get banned.
Just put your HDD on the new console & off you go.

But when you think about it, having a HDD on the Arcade would be good for all parties,
1) Discontinuing the Arcade would remove the bottleneck - allowing Devs to optimize for the HDD.
2) I for one could do with a spare HDD enclosure to make a 120GB HDD tongue.gif

Couldn't agree more to any of those, drop the aracade, price drop for the pro and elite to make room for the inevitable next SKU

In contrast, I bought my first Xbox 360 two weeks ago, and am so glad I bought an Elite. I've already filled up about half of my 120GB storage since I'm installing all my game to the hard drive. I've been pleasantly surprised about how quiet this unit is (and it's the older Falcon chipset, not even a Jasper) after reading about how loud the Xbox 360 is, and I attribute its silence to the lack of an optical drive running all the time.

Yup,

The 360 is so much quieter when you install the games to the HD. 120gb isn't bad for space either. I don't think I simutaneously play more than 10 games at a time... allthough its nice to leave you're favorite ones on there. IfI get a new game I can usually find an old one to delete to make room.

Installing to the hard drive was the best feature of the NXE dashboard.

Get rid of the arcade version? I think that would be a terrible loss for microsoft. It seems like a huge advantage to have a cheaper console that can compete against the Wii and cost near half of the PS3. Im considering buying an arcade myself. Its the same console in reality, just cheaper. If they do change the arcades why not just throw in a 20GB hdd with them and keep the same price? That would be a great deal! but either way i wont argue against a price drop in the near future.

The arcade is extremely useful if you get banned or if your 360 simply gets the rrod.

I just hope the new hdd is 320gb or more.
