If you can get the key out of the new drive your getting and spoof it in to the existing drive then yeah you can use it.

But if you can get the key out of the new drive then why don't you just put iXtreme on that?

I agree. You cant just simply plug a drive into a 360 and expect it to work.

The hardest thing you will need to do is extract the drive key from your new drive. This drive key is required to be injected into the firmware of the old drive you are replacing it with.

It is much easier to just flash the new drive from your new system IF you are lucky enough to get a new console that still has a moddable drive. If not then both option wont work for you since you wont be able to get the drive key.
